A City Shaped by Committed Citizens
Long bemoaned as the capital of congestion, Los Angeles has emerged as one of the nation's transit leaders, surprising as that may be. As a Coro Fellow in 1980, I studied the then-clunky, bus-dominant status of public transit in the region. Old transit hands I interviewed lamented the loss of the Red Line passenger rail that crisscrossed the county. I could only imagine at that time the throngs of Angelenos who took such mobility for granted. Now I have lived to ride the newest Metro line with my fellow citizens to within walking distance of the Pacific Ocean.

MoveLA, a project of Community Partners for almost nine years now, got the ball rolling toward the expansion of the Expo Line under the leadership of former Santa Monica Mayor Denny Zane, who addresses the history here. Denny and his team at MoveLA were thought leaders and proponents of the half-cent sales tax known as Measure R that finally brought the county enough financing to support a more robust transit build-out.

Putting Wheels in Motion for BikeSGV's Golden Streets

BikeSGV's free Open Streets event is
June 26th

It's 9 days before the San Gabriel Valley plays host to what may be the most ambitious open streets event in the country and Wes Reutimann is understandably feeling slammed. "It's definitely been the most difficult project of my professional career," says the director of Bike SGV, the lead organizer of the upcoming event.

Two years in the planning, the 626 Golden Streets event, set for June 26, will open up 17 miles of San Gabriel Valley streets to people traffic -- bicyclists, pedestrians and skaters - making it potentially the longest open streets route yet. The event required the coordination of seven San Gabriel Valley cities and one jurisdiction. Safety meetings have included officers from 16 different police and fire agencies. Three nonprofit organizations have been directly involved with planning and coordination, and several others are in charge of arts programming and other events to liven the day. "It's been incredibly complex to coordinate," Reutimann observed.
