Unpacking What We Mean by "Capacity Building"
We talk a lot about "capacity building" and take for granted everyone knows what that term means. But what we've woven intentionally into our organizational DNA might be less obvious to others than we think. A brief look behind the scenes at Community Partners should help.
Take a peek through the tall door-side window of our main conference room on a recent training day. Staff members from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health huddle intently in conversation. A facilitator or participant occasionally annotates a discussion by affixing to the wall a sticky note with a key point jotted on it. Eager to clarify, someone diagrams a set of complex relationships on a white board for all to assess. A presenter talks through a slide deck projected on a giant wall-mounted monitor. A satisfying, energetic buzz punctuated by the knowing 'aha' of laughter bears all the markings of a committed group translating disparate thoughts on vital ideas and human lives into a concrete, understandable plan of action.

An empty, unpaved lot in East Hollywood's Little Armenia is transformed into a pop-up multi-media installation space. A week later, it's a school yard in Watts that, for one evening, becomes a vibrant celebration of visual, spoken word and performance art.
"We want to bring creativity to blighted spaces...and help people think differently about what's possible in their neighborhoods," said Joe Smoke, grants program director for the DCA. "We want the Arts Activation Fund to help empower artists and build value around authentic creative voices."
Where does Community Partners fit into this? The Cultural Affairs department needed a

Center for Council in the Balkans
This past March, Center for Council Director Jared Seide, in partnership with Zen Peacemakers, offered a council training workshop in Sarajevo for a group of Croat, Serb and Bosnian peacemakers. Designed as a peace-building effort to address the aftermath of the 1990's genocide in the Balkans, the workshop established a partnership with a local NGO that plans to continue Council practice in its ongoing community work. As Seide notes in this reflection, the Sarajevo Council workshop was a "profound reminder of the boundless potential of Council to establish genuine dialogue, engagement, and compassion even between individuals at the most extreme odds."

Look on local newsstands this month for Seventeen Magazine and their #BetterMakeRoom article, highlighting the First Lady's initiative to give every student a chance for higher education. Gemma Busoni, an alumn of Community Partners project CoderDoJoLA, participated in an essay contest about overcoming obstacles during the journey to college -- and won! She was pictured on Seventeen's May cover alongside Mrs. Obama and was even invited to the White House to meet the First Lady. Congratulations Gemma! Read the article here.

The Urban Peace Institute (UPI), a project of Community Partners, was mentioned in this StateScoop piece on the group's efforts to change the CalGang database, a statewide collection of "suspected gang members" that has been used since 1997. UPI is currently working to create greater transparency and accountability around the database, and legislation is moving closer to a floor vote.

Mornings With Minjay recently published a profile of Keren Taylor, Executive Director of Community Partners' project WriteGirl. The article discusses Taylor's success in "doing meaningful work and finding balance," and she describes a writing exercise, similar to the ones led at WriteGirl workshops, to help everyone find that work/life balance.

Rick's "Top 5 Things to Know About Budgeting"
As Community Partners Director of Accounting Rick Gutierrez notes, May is a great month for nonprofits to review their finances and budget strategies before the close of the fiscal year. This is a friendly reminder to examine how your organization's existing dollars are being used.
Here are Rick's "Top 5 Things to Know About Budgeting"
- A budget is a powerful and important tool that can help you get a grip on spending.
- Be sure to know the difference between "want vs. need" when budgeting.
- Be conservative with regards to budgeted revenue. Counting on revenue that is a "long-shot" may cause issues down the line if those funds don't come in.
- Revisit your budget often: compare actual expenses and revenue to your budgeted figures as the months close, and then adjust your forecast as needed.
- Lastly, it is always important to align your budget with your annual plan.
