Stewardship Personified
The notion of stewardship suggests more than mere responsibility. A steward assumes a duty of caring and loyalty well beyond what law and custom require.
Three Community Partners volunteer directors epitomize what lies at the heart of stewardship as they complete their terms of service on board.
Jack Shakely has been a steadfast supporter of Community Partners since well before we formally established the organization. While in the role of President & CEO at California Community Foundation, Shakely in 1991 helped guide our very first grant proposal - to explore the feasibility of creating Community Partners - through CCF's board. Long a friend of our late founding board chair, Albert R. Rodriguez, and both a mentor and friend to me, Shakely was the first person to say "yes, I will serve" when Al enlisted his membership on the founding board of our fledgling effort.

Holiday Gathering 2015
|
At Community Partners' annual holiday gathering last week, we bid farewell to three devoted, long-time board members, honored several institutional partners that supported our work early on...and a most prominent foundation leader dubbed CP president Paul Vandeventer 'Crazy Glue' (more on that later).
Each year at this time, we bring together a wonderfully diverse group of staff, project leaders, nonprofit executives, foundation folk and many others to celebrate the season, catch up with old friends, make new connections - and also take a moment to recognize those working especially diligently to make a difference in the region.

We do this with the Albert R. Rodriguez Civic Legacy Honors, created in memory of Community Partners co-founder Al Rodriguez as a way keep alive Community Partners' - and Al's - spirited dedication to ethical integrity, public accountability, and fiscal prudence in charitable enterprise. "The topic at these parties is typically taboo, but that's the point," Gupta offers, referring to the program's focus on helping young adults address loss and grief. Alberto Roca, project leader of DiverseScholar, led a team that won an award from the inaugural Hack Day organized by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Boston Future of Research Symposium. Their winning entry, "How many postdocs? Data to Drive Diversity," analyzed and published federal data on the postdoctoral scholar talent pool key to developing diversity in faculty recruiting efforts.

Captain Planet Grants Deadline: January 31 The Captain Planet Foundation supports educational programs that enable youth to understand and appreciate our world by getting involved in hands-on projects to improve the environment. Grants requests must be between $500-$2,500.

The Reva and David Logan Foundation supports nonprofit organizations in California that address the arts, investigative journalism, scholarship, and social justice. Letters of inquiry are welcome throughout the year.
