In Support of Creative, Engaged Good Government

The advent of a Presidential election year promises a year-long season ahead during which public officials, the democratic election process itself, and the government institutions critical to our national well-being will endure relentless pummeling. For the sake of civic sanity, I'd like to take a step back from the American sport called "trashing the commons" and offer an appreciation for what so many among us too readily dismiss.

Amid tragic scenes of devastation, most recently from the dam breaches and flooding in South Carolina, it is government that local residents will turn to for the big picture stuff, like rebuilding those dams and fixing roads and restoring water supplies and electricity. And, of course, FEMA for grants and loans, property protection and public safety during that crucial post-disaster period when people are regaining their balance. That is the job of government. Disaster has a way of bringing the need for big muscle into acute perspective. That's at least one reason it's good to have a government agency or two around and a few officials looking out for the public good nearby when things go awry.

At Community Partners, we're fans of good, active and engaged government. We appreciate, for example, that an insightful new Mayor of Long Beach, already busy running a complex city of nearly 500,000, created the Mayor's Fund for Education and asked to house it under the Community Partners umbrella. He knows we care about the people of his city and will work diligently to help fulfill his intention that a city government that cares about having smart citizens will have another ally in the task.

Project in the Spotlight
Big news, and a well-deserved honor, for NewGround: A Muslim-Jewish Partnership for Change. Project leader Aziza Hassan was named to President Obama's White House Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

"I am honored to have the opportunity to serve in this capacity, especially to be able to do meaningful work around the issue of poverty," Hassan told us. "In my line of work I'm often asked: 'what is the point of interfaith dialogue?' To me, this council is exactly what it's about -- bringing together people of different faiths to improve the community around us." She was profiled and featured as a 'rising star' by the website Ozy. In other NewGround news, staffer Saaliha Khan was the subject of this story in the Los Angeles Daily News, in which she characterized negative comments from Republican presidential candidates as "an opportunity to dialog and shed light on America's diverse Muslim communities."

Projects in the News
Photo: Los Angeles LGBT Center
A new center in Boyle Heights is a 'little piece of heaven' for gay Latinos, reports the LA Times. The new center, also covered by KPCC, is called Mi Centro and is the result of a partnership between Los Angeles LGBT Center and Latino Equality Alliance, a project of Community Partners.

National recognition was also bestowed on El Monte Promise, which was selected for the "Bright Spots in Hispanic Education National Online Catalog." Read more about the honor here. The project prepares students for college from a young age and is part of a wider community building initiative for El Monte.

In the news again this month is Patrick Ball who heads up the Human Rights Data Analysis Group. He traveled to Senegal to provide expert testimony in the trial of Chadian dictator Hissene Habre. Here's a Storify about it.

"It is important to elevate the voices of people standing up for their rights in the workplace," writes Lola Smallwood Cuevas, director of the Community Partners sponsored Los Angeles Black Worker Center, in a piece for the Huffington Post. The article came out on the day she participated in the recent Worker Voice Summit at the White House.

Los Angeles Food Policy Council executive director Clare Fox was a guest on Madeline Brand's PressPlay (KCRW) along with LAFPC board member and KCRW Good Food host Evan Kleiman. The organization also caught the interest of Darling magazine.
