Leaders as Artists and Artists as Leaders
Carl Coan detached recently from the lead executive role at Eisner Pediatric & Family Medical Center. He made elegant use of the occasion heralding his transition by using the clinic's lobby to display a gallery of he and his wife, Neala's, stunning photographs. His board chair and colleagues spoke with love and generosity about Carl's professional accomplishments. When it was Carl's turn to speak, he did so through the metaphor of art. To Herb Shultz, his successor as the clinic's CEO, Carl passed along a symbolic conductor's baton. Implicit in the hand-off was the notion that executive leadership is most often a matter of seeing, assembling and inspiring a symphony of talent.
Carl's photography curates a varied and delightful range of images. He's interested in the ways people display and sometimes disparage the American flag. He evoked a sense of mystery with - and challenged others to interpret - a lone set of running shoes casually placed outdoors on a low wall.

Visions for LA's Future
A dozen Community Partners projects are participating in LA 2050's 2014 Grants Challenge. From tackling policy change to make streets safer for pedestrians, to helping small "mom n' pop" store owners create oases of good food businesses in 'food desert' communities, Community Partners projects have submitted (both solo and as partners) a wealth of compelling proposals. Check them out here. And remember that public voting begins Sept. 2. $1M is at stake.

Jewish Women's Theater in the LA Times
"We're presenting the Jewish woman in her diversity and changing perceptions of Jewish women in society," says Project Leader Ronda Spinak, of Jewish Women's Theater, in a recent front-page Los Angeles Times article spotlighting the organization. How did the group attract such excellent press? Ronda says she met the reporter at an event, invited her to a performance, and then over the ensuing year regularly invited her to events and kept in contact. The result is terrific.

Urban TxT Cultivating Tech Talent in South LA
Urban TxT (Teens Exploring Technology) not only held its
second annual 'Demo Day' at USC recently, but also landed a story on the event in the LA Times. Learn more about how this start-up is helping South LA students become technology entrepreneurs.

Multicultural Communities for Mobility spreads the pro-bike message, with Miguel Ramos as the biking superhero, in this inspiring new video extolling the work of Multicultural Communities for Mobility. The CalBike Education Fund supports MCM's work to promote bicycling in the Latino communities of Los Angeles and hopes to use their success as a model for multicultural promotion throughout the state.

Action Civics Takes Action in LA
Community Partners recently co-hosted the West Coast launch reception for Action Civics LA, which will soon be housed at our offices. Originating in Chicago under Mikva Challenge, the program works to make civic participation relevant to the lives of young people. Pictured from left are: Michelle M. Fiorella Coaguila
Program Assistant
Fiorella provides support to Community Partners' fiscal sponsorship team. She's an advocate for social justice and community service, and previously worked with the Transfer Resource Program at UC Berkeley. Before joining Community Partners, Fiorella served as an HIV/AIDS health educator for Spanish-speaking audiences in her community. Through her current role, she continues to expand her knowledge of the nonprofit field and enjoys learning about the challenges and successes of emerging nonprofits. She received her B.A. from UC Berkeley.

For Grace, a project of Community Partners, is hosting its 7th annual Women in Pain Conference at the California Endowment's Center for Healthy Communities. The 2014 theme, "Accepting Pain - Our New Normal," will focus on the acceptance of one's chronic pain experience, with a special emphasis on behavioral therapies and tools for better wellness and pain control. A select number of free passes are available for attendees.
