We Best Hang Together or Risk Hanging Alone
Los Angeles nonprofits trying to move the needle toward stronger, more caring communities face monumental obstacles. The appeal of staying nose to the grindstone and laser-focusing on just the immediate work at hand certainly feels understandable.
But bunker-hunkering with a silo mentality - especially among so many separate, disaggregated organizations - will prove a recipe for diminishing returns. Certainly that was one key conclusion reached by a distinguished group of four national, state and local leaders at a recent discussion sponsored by Community Partners and Southern California Grantmakers, and moderated by myself.
"Where is LA in the Federal Game: How Regional Philanthropy Can Make a Difference" featured Diana Aviv, president of Independent Sector; Leonard Aube, executive director of the Annenberg Foundation; Jan Masaoka, president of the reinvigorated CalNonprofits, and Wendy Garen, president of the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation. The group raised their voices in unison about the critical need for Los Angeles to project a collective voice of its own - one loud and nuanced enough to be heard in Washington, D.C.

The Lavender Effect's Pride for the Past
 |
A team from Evolution Media has been instrumental in producing the project videos.

June is LGBTQ Pride Month, and Andy Sacher of The Lavender Effect has his hands full raising the banner of LGBTQ history wherever he can.
There's the float he was asked to help out with at the West Hollywood Pride Parade. He helped select the 'pioneers' of the LGBTQ community invited to ride on the Christopher Street West entry. There's an exhibit of news clippings and images from both The Lavender Effect and ONE Archive, now up for the month at The Hollywood Museum, that offer an invaluable peek at the social climate for gays and lesbians in Hollywood's not-so-distant past. Later this month he'll give a lecture at downtown Central Library. But the major focus for The Lavender Effect right now, a project of Community Partners that works to advance the future of LGBTQ history and culture, is the Oral History Project.
Representative Sheila Kuehl, activist Carolyn Weathers and Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl are among the 14 individuals who will sit down for cameras this month and record two-hour oral histories in the format established by the Shoah Foundation.

Applications are now being accepted for the next round, and it's a not-to-be missed opportunity - not only because there is $35,000 in awards at stake, but because the ten or so leaders selected receive two months' worth of invaluable training and mentoring from experts on how to more powerfully tell their story.
