If you were out and about this past Sunday morning chances are you experienced the extremely icy and dangerous road conditions. There were hundreds of accidents that led to injuries and even some fatalities. 

 

When it comes to ice, no matter how great your tires are or how heavy your vehicle is or how much of an awesome driver you are, there is no controlling your vehicle.

As festive as it might appear to have icicles dangling from your roof in the wintertime, the reality of the situation can turn out to be something very different. You might be looking at the outward sign that your home is being damaged by an ice dam.

 

What is an ice dam, and how does it form?

When snow accumulates on a roof, a cycle of melting and refreezing occurs. In a perfect world, the snow would melt off the roof, enter the gutters, and flow harmlessly to the ground. Or the snow would evaporate from the action of the sun, and never really melt off unless the outside temperature rose above the freezing point. However, two key factors interact to cause problems... the outside temperature and the temperature of the inside of your attic.
