After King vs. Burwell: Give States More Control Over Healthcare
Now that the dust has settled and the major legal challenges involving the Affordable Care Act are over, lawmakers and the public should focus their attention on whether the law is delivering on its original promise of healthcare affordability.

There is no doubt that there are people who are benefiting from the ACA. But that is only part of the story. The reality is that Arizona has neither seen the expected, dramatic reduction in its uninsured nor the promised decline in premiums.

What the state has seen is a lot of churn between types of coverage. Many of the exchange enrollments and Medicaid sign-ups are people who are substituting taxpayer-funded coverage for their previous private health insurance.

Evaluating and Understanding New Payment Model Commercial Payer Contracts: What Physicians Need to Know
Commercial payers are increasingly pursuing contracts with physicians based on new payment models, such as pay-for-performance and bundled or episode-based payment. These alternative payment models can rely on both cost and quality metrics to determine payment rates for physicians. Navigating the assortment of new payer contracts can be made easier by gaining an understanding of payer agreements and the portions of those agreements that should be prioritized and can be negotiated.

The American Medical Association, in continuing its work to help physicians adapt to and succeed in the new world of alternative payment models, has developed two new resources that explain key issues physicians should consider when evaluating bundled or episode-based and pay-for-performance agreements.

Life Insurance and Women Who Work
Over 60% of women bring home a paycheck to their families, playing an important role as a financial contributor to household income. However, despite making up a prominent percentage of today's workforce, many women are failing to plan for the financial security of their families with life insurance.

According to Life and Health Foundation for Education, 64% of women do not have any life insurance coverage, a serious financial risk for any dependent that relies upon her income. Studies also show that women tend to purchase less than half of the typical coverage, and do not adjust their coverage amounts throughout their career as income increases.

University of Arizona Medical Simulation Lab Allows Firefighters To Prepare for Unthinkable
Kneeling on the floor with only a sheet covering it, firefighter Nathan Phillips stretches a rubber tourniquet as tight as he can around the severed leg of his patient.

The patient's eyes are wide, his face seemingly contorted in fear, but he remains motionless and silent as Phillips manages to stop the flow of blood.

Phillips then turns to fire Capt. Albert Abril: "Hey, man. Do you think this is tight enough?"

In this case, there's time for feedback and room for error. The patient is a high-tech mannequin in the Center for Simulation and Innovation at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix.

Phillips was part of a group of firefighters receiving paramedic training recently through the lab, practicing on mannequins that simulate gunshot and knife wounds, collapsed lungs and more.

Major Updates Given on Arizona Health Sciences Center
Dr. Joe G.N. "Skip" Garcia, senior vice president for the Arizona Health Sciences Center, gave the State of Arizona Health Sciences Center address Tuesday, September 29.

"It has been such an honor and a privilege to have led the health sciences for the past two years," Garcia said.

His address began with an announcement that Health Sciences will rebrand. The Arizona Health Sciences Center, the former name of the institution, will be changed to the University of Arizona Health Sciences.

"I think this is a name change that will be really welcomed because I think this change brings a great strength to the [UA] brand," Garcia said.
