Arizona's 'Abortion Reversal' Law Put on Hold

Alia Beard Rau, The Republic | azcentral.com
Originally posted June 16, 2015

Arizona's controversial new abortion law will not go into effect on July 3 as scheduled.

The state and a group of medical professionals that sued Arizona over the law have agreed to delay its implementation until federal courts have a chance to rule on the matter.

The law, the first of its kind in the nation, requires abortion providers to tell patients that it is possible to reverse a medication abortion. Three Arizona doctors and Planned Parenthood Arizona filed a federal lawsuit earlier this month challenging the law and asking the court to stop it from going into effect.

A hearing had been scheduled for June 23, but a key state witness wasn't available, according to court documents. The two sides agreed to delay the effective date and asked the court for a three-day hearing in September or October.

Judge Steven Logan still needs to sign off on the agreement, but approval typically is a formality when both sides agree.

For Doctors Who Take a Break from Practice,
Coming Back Can Be Tough

Kaiser Health News (KHN) is a nonprofit national health policy news service.

After taking a 10-year break from practicing medicine to raise four sons, Kate Gibson was ready to go back to work.

The family practitioner had been reading about a shortage of primary care doctors and knew she could help. But when Gibson, 51, applied to work at her former hospital near Los Angeles, she was turned away. She'd been out of clinical practice too long.

"I really thought it was not going to be that hard," she said.

Like many professionals, physicians take time off to raise children, care for sick family members or to recover from their own illnesses. Some want to return from retirement or switch from non-clinical jobs back to seeing patients. But picking up where they left off is more difficult in medicine than in most careers.

In medicine, change occurs quickly. Drugs, devices and surgical techniques that were standard a decade ago may now be obsolete. Or a returning doctor's skills may simply be rusty.

"My hands feel like those of an intern," said Molly Carey, 36, an Ivy-League educated doctor who recently enrolled in a Texas retraining program after four years away from patients.

After extended leaves, doctors must convince medical boards to reissue their licenses, hospitals to grant admitting privileges and malpractice insurers to provide coverage. Only a handful of programs around the country are set up to help physicians brush up on their skills, and they can cost doctors thousands of dollars.

Midwestern University Foundation Launches Cost-Saving Private Loan Program to Help Students Reduce Debt

The Midwestern University Foundation has launched a new loan program for its graduate health professions students, which will reduce costs to borrowers and help them better manage their educational debt.

Through the Glendale Industrial Development Authority and the Illinois Finance Authority, the Midwestern University Foundation has issued $30 million in tax-exempt revenue bonds to create this innovative program. The loans will be available exclusively to third- and fourth-year students in the University's graduate programs of dental medicine, pharmacy, optometry, veterinary medicine, and the health sciences at its two campuses in Glendale, AZ, and Downers Grove, IL. These loans will have no origination fees for the students and offer a lower fixed interest rate (currently 6%) than that available to students who borrow funds from the Federal Direct Student Loan Grad Plus Program.

MCMS Member to Release First Novel - Hosting Book Signing at the Changing Hands Bookstore, July 14

Long-time MCMS member (39 years in 2015!), Stephen Stein, MD, is publishing his first novel, THE OATH.

THE OATH, a historical novel about the Holocaust, is loosely based on Operation Paper Clip, the clandestine government program that welcomed Nazi scientists and doctors to America, ignoring their war crimes, which included torturing concentration prisoners with their ruthless experiments that often led to death.

THE OATH explores how inhumanity can make its victims accomplices to its deeds and how the consequences of those actions perpetuate a cycle of suffering, revenge and guilt. THE OATH is a riveting story and powerful contribution to Holocaust literature and a must-read for anyone interested in the Holocaust and its aftermath.

If you would like to learn more about the book and/or speak with the author, Dr. Stein will host a book signing Tuesday, July 14, 2015, 7 pm at the  Changing Hands Bookstore, 300 W. Camelback Rd, Phoenix.

AZ Health Industry Exhales After ACA Court Victory

By Ken Alltucker, The Republic

Originally posted June 26, 2015

With the U.S. Supreme Court backing the Affordable Care Act for the second time in three years, Arizona hospitals and health interests say it removes major uncertainty about the healthcare law that has extended coverage to more than a half-million Arizonans.

The Supreme Court on Thursday affirmed a key tenet of the law that extends subsidies for low- and moderate-income residents. The 6-3 decision written by Chief Justice John Roberts means that about 126,500 Arizonans will continue to collect tax-credit subsidies that help them pay their monthly health-insurance bills.
