May is Hepatitis Awareness Month
Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C can become chronic, life-long infections, which can lead to liver cancer. Millions of Americans are living with chronic viral hepatitis and many do not know they are infected.

The CDC's Division of Viral Hepatitis is leading a national  campaign called Know More Hepatitis. The initiative aims to increase awareness about this hidden epidemic and encouraging people born from 1945-1965 to get tested for Hepatitis C. The division is also coordinating with community partners to promote testing among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders through the multilingual Know Hepatitis B campaign.

There will also be a number of free hepatitis C testing events in Arizona. For more details, including downloadable/printable flyers, visit: http://www.azdhs.gov/preparedness/epidemiology-disease-control/hepatitis/index.php#awareness-month

The Arizona Department of Health Services is an available resource to you. For more information, Arizona Department of Health Services, Viral Hepatitis Program at 602-364-3676 or

The CDC has put together numerous resources for physicians available on their website.

Gov. Ducey names new Department of Health Services Director

Gov. Doug Ducey has named a new director to lead the state's Department of Health Services.

Ducey named Dr. Cara Christ to head the agency that oversees public health on Wednesday. She joined the department in 2008 and has served as the department's chief medical officer, licensing director and deputy director of public health.

She obtained her medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine in 2005.

Christ replaces Will Humble, who left the department in March. Humble now works for the University of Arizona's Arizona Health Sciences Center.

Phoenix Reps Get Leadership Position with Medical School Group

Admissions Chief to Lead Regional Medical College Association

Tara K. Cunningham, EdD, assistant dean of admissions and recruitment and co-director of diversity and inclusion at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix, has been selected to lead a regional group of the American Association of Medical Colleges.

Cunningham will chair the association's Western Group on Student Affairs after having served as vice chair for the past year.  The transition occurred during the group's annual meeting in San Diego.  The position also places Cunningham on the national steering committee for student affairs.

Karen Restifo, MD, associate dean of student affairs for the college, will continue to serve as the region's representative to the committee on student affairs.

Also, second-year student Taylor Pitt was selected for a leadership position with the AAMC Organization of Student Representatives. Pitt will serve as the legislative affairs person for the regional student group.

Nearly 20 faculty and staffers made presentations on medical education innovations, assessment and evaluation, and student services during the meeting in San Diego.

Faculty members Jennifer Hartmark-Hill, MD, Elaine Niggemann, MD, and Janet Maurer, MD,  and staff member Reed Michaelsen led a workshop during the meeting entitled, "Innovation in Case-Based Instruction: Use of a video module and immediate-response quizzing software." The poster for that presentation received a third-place award in the Computer Resources in Medical Education category.

Three Questions to Help Sort Student Health Coverage Choices
A key question remains for many students who've finally settled on a college destination: How will they or their parents handle healthcare coverage?

A doctor's office visit can cost over $100 for someone without insurance. A car accident that turns into a short hospital day can quickly bury a student and his or her parents in more than $30,000 in debt. Plus those who skip coverage may face a penalty under the federal healthcare overhaul.

Brokers say students heading off to school in the fall can finalize their insurance plans as late as July or August. But they should start thinking about their needs long before they begin packing for a dorm.
