High Court Sides With Idaho In Medicaid Reimbursement Rate Case
The U.S. Supreme Court on March 31st ruled in a case from Idaho that private medical providers that deliver residential care services cannot sue a state in try to raise Medicaid reimbursement rates to deal with rising medical costs.

The justices, on a 5-4 vote, ruled in favor of the state of Idaho, which asserted that medical providers have no legal recourse to sue. The ruling is a loss for the healthcare industry, with trade groups and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce backing the providers in the case.

Arizona Legislature OKs Abortion Medication Requirement
Arizona lawmakers approved legislation that requires abortion providers to tell women they can reverse the effects of a drug-induced abortion and bars women from buying any healthcare plan through the federal marketplace that includes abortion coverage.

Advocates on both sides of the issue said it's the first time such a reversal requirement has passed in the U.S., though Arkansas also is considering similar legislation. Critics say there's no science to back up the requirement.

The Senate passed the proposal Wednesday on an 18-11 vote. It now heads to Republican Gov. Doug Ducey, who has pledged to defend the right to life but hasn't weighed in on this specific legislation.

The Aging Brain and Vitamin D: A Randomized Control Trial

To help understand the molecular mechanisms behind Alzheimer's disease, the ASU School of Nutrition and Health Promotion is recruiting volunteers who are at least 50 years old.

This 8-week trial will examine how restoring vitamin D status affects beta amyloid peptide clearance from the brain to the blood. Volunteer participation includes two fasting blood draws within 8 weeks and consumption of a vitamin D or placebo supplement once a week for 8 weeks. The Institutional Review Board of Arizona State University has approved this research.

ASU intends to enroll about 40 participants and has begun the recruiting process.

If you are interested in assisting ASU with the recruitment phase or wish to find out more information, you may contact the investigator, Brendan Miller, by email (Brendan.Miller@asu.edu) or by phone (480-580-0099).

MCMS Member and Valley Cardiologist - Richard Heuser, MD - Pioneers New Approach for the Treatment of Resistant Hypertension
Richard Heuser, MD

Dr. Richard Heuser, Chief of Cardiology at St. Luke's Medical Center, Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, Phoenix, Arizona, and partner with the Phoenix Heart Center at St. Luke's Medical Center, wrote a new textbook, "Renal Denervation: A New Approach to the Treatment of Resistant Hypertension," in conjunction with his fellow medical colleagues, Dr. Markus Schlaich and Dr. Horst Sievert. This is Dr. Heuser's sixth textbook and was written for cardiologists, nephrologists and urologists, as well as allied health professionals and medical device companies.

Most recently, Dr. Heuser unveiled the new book during a medical presentation at TRENDS in Berlin, the premier meeting on this topic in the world. He and his team recently received funding for Verve Medical, an Arizona-based company that develops and manufactures the medical devices used for renal denervation treatments. The company recently announced they've raised $3.1 million in funding.

"The safe and effective way to reduce blood pressure for patients with resistant hypertension is through renal denervation," said Dr. Heuser. "Renal denervation is a minimally invasive surgery that enlists an endovascular catheter to fire multiple electrodes simultaneously with an updated radiofrequency generator."

Important Drug Warning - FDA Drug Safety Communication
FDA warns of serious slowing of the heart rate when antiarrhythmic drug amiodarone is used with hepatitis C treatments containing sofosbuvir (Harvoni or Sovaldi) in combination with another Direct Acting Antiviral drug

Safety Announcement - March 24, 2015

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning that serious slowing of the heart rate can occur when the antiarrhythmic drug amiodarone is taken together with either the hepatitis C drug Harvoni (ledipasvir/sofosbuvir) or with Sovaldi (sofosbuvir) taken in combination with another direct acting antiviral for the treatment of hepatitis C infection. Information about serious slowing of the heart rate, known as symptomatic bradycardia, will be added to the Harvoni and Sovaldi labels.

They recommend healthcare professionals should not prescribe either Harvoni or Sovaldi combined with another direct acting antiviral, such as the investigational drug daclatasvir or Olysio (simeprevir), with amiodarone. Patients should not stop taking any of their medicines without first talking to their healthcare professionals.

Information Regarding the 2015 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule

The negative update of 21% under current law for the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule is scheduled to take effect on April 1, 2015. Medicare Physician Fee Schedule claims for services rendered on or before March 31, 2015, are unaffected by the payment cut and will be processed and paid under normal procedures and time frames. The Administration urges Congress to take action to ensure these cuts do not take effect.

However, until that happens, CMS must take steps to implement the negative update.  Under current law, electronic claims are not paid sooner than 14 calendar days (29 days for paper claims) after the date of receipt.  CMS will send notification on or before April 11, 2015, with more information about the status of Congressional action to avert the negative update and next steps.

As more news comes into the Maricopa County Medical Society, we'll be sure to communicate it to our membership.
