Primary Care, Internal Medicine, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners and all other physician specialties are minimally exposed to the continual influx of new research data, recent studies and emerging disease states and lack expert mentoring to be able to improve competency, practice performance and patient outcomes.

AZ Dept. of Public Health Requests Your Assistance - Please Take a Survey

Public health partners around the State are trying to gather more information on the knowledge of dengue fever among practicing physicians. This information will help us identify what type of public health interventions will be of most benefit in and around Arizona.

Below is a link to a survey on dengue fever for practicing clinicians. The survey is anonymous, very short, and only takes a few minutes of your time. At the end, we will provide additional information on dengue fever, as well as continuing education options related to dengue fever. We would very much appreciate you taking a few minutes of your time to complete this brief survey.

Here is the survey link:

CMS Extends Deadline for Medicare Eligible Professionals to Attest to Meaningful Use

Eligible professionals now have until 11:59 pm ET on March 20, 2015, to attest to meaningful use for the Medicare Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Program 2014 reporting year.

CMS extended the deadline to allow providers extra time to submit their meaningful use data. CMS continues to urge providers to begin attesting for 2014 as soon as they can.

This extension also allows eligible professionals, who have not already used their one "switch," to switch programs (from Medicare to Medicaid, or vice versa) for the 2014 payment year until 11:59 pm ET on March 20, 2015. After that time, eligible professionals will no longer be able to switch programs.

Let the Lawmakers Know How You Feel About Pending Legislation!

Did you know that your support of or opposition to any bill can - and will - be seen by our legislators as they cast their votes?

Did you know that many bills are considered each legislative session that have an impact on the way you practice medicine?

The Arizona Legislature has a very simple-to-use platform that allows citizens to track bills, provide comment in support or opposition of a bill, and easily sign up to speak on behalf of a bill. All you need to know is a bill number.

MCMS is helping physicians register for the online portal and hope that you can take thirty seconds to provide us with a name and email address. We'll do the rest!  We'll get your account created and activated, and then email you the easy instructions for logging on and tracking bills.

Even if you only track and comment on a single bill, it's worth it! Just click here and we'll get you started.

We need your help! Join a MCMS Committee!

The Maricopa County Medical Society has numerous committees designed to carry out specific missions that help support the practice of medicine. These committees help bring our members together, provide educational materials and announcements, and advance strategic initiatives that serve the physician community.

Interested in policy making? We have a policy committee. Is quality and education your passion? If so, we have a committee for that, too! Our committees include membership, public health, finance, social, philanthropy, mentorship, education & quality, and policy.

How much time does it take? Not much, actually. Most of our committees have a teleconference one a month or once a quarter, and usually need an hour or less to discuss business.

The Society staff carries out much of the work directed by the committees, so the time required by you will be little.

The High Cost of Becoming a Physician
By Paul Jarrett, MD,
MCMS Member since 1946

We are admonished to honor our Physicians because of our need for them. By the same token, physicians must honor their patients because without them they would not be needed.

The "Big Drama" as Dr. Fethiere was fond of saying, is today's cost of producing physicians. Few graduate without assuming a debt of gargantuan proportions that seems impossible to repay.

In order to insure a supply, the government offers loans, repayment of which has become tenuous at best because of the size. Frequently a successful candidate for medical school must have a master's degree in order to be considered. Upon completion, the new graduate must travel country-wide at his expense for interviews at Institutions that provide post-graduate hospital training.

The Aging Brain and Vitamin D: A Randomized Control Trial

To help understand the molecular mechanisms behind Alzheimer's disease, the ASU School of Nutrition and Health Promotion is recruiting volunteers who are at least 50 years old.

This 8-week trial will examine how restoring vitamin D status affects beta amyloid peptide clearance from the brain to the blood. Volunteer participation includes 2 fasting blood draws within 8 weeks and consumption of a vitamin D or placebo supplement once a week for 8 weeks. The Institutional Review Board of Arizona State University has approved this research.

ASU intends to enroll about 40 participants and has begun the recruiting process.

If you are interested in assisting ASU with the recruitment phase or wish to find out more information, you may contact the investigator, Brendan Miller, by email (Brendan.Miller@asu.edu) or by phone (480-580-0099).
