| Alaska Health Plan Premiums, Highest in Nation, Are Triple Those in Phoenix | | |

In health insurance prices, as in the weather, Alaska and the Sun Belt are extremes. This year Alaska is the most expensive health insurance market for people who do not get coverage through their employers, while Phoenix, Albuquerque, N.M., and Tucson, Ariz., are among the very cheapest.
In this second year of the insurance marketplaces created by the federal health law, the most expensive premiums are in rural spots around the nation: Wyoming, rural Nevada, patches of inland California and the southernmost county in Mississippi, according to an analysis by the Kaiser Family Foundation, which has compiled premium prices from around the country. (KHN is an editorially independent program of the foundation.)
The most and least expensive regions are determined by the monthly premium for the least expensive "silver" level plan, which is the type most consumers buy and covers on average 70 percent of medical expenses. Premiums in the priciest areas are triple those in the least expensive areas. Read the full article >>

| Science Activities on Tap for UA Phoenix Campus During Super Bowl Week | | |
The University of Arizona and COX Communications have partnered to bring science and hands-on learning to downtown Phoenix just in time for the Super Bowl. Connect2STEM is the official kickoff for the 2015 Arizona SciTech Festival, a statewide celebration of science, technology, engineering and math held annually in February and March.
"Connect2STEM" will take place on the UA College of Medicine - Phoenix campus at 5th Street and Van Buren, just blocks from Super Bowl Central, on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 10 am to 4 pm.
STEM enthusiasts will learn about the science of creating a video game, see real space equipment and touch synthetic cadavers. Food Trucks will be available on-site.
The Jan. 31 event is open to the public and will feature five hands-on activity zones designed for all ages. Read more >>

High school students interested in an in-depth look at healthcare careers are encouraged to apply for Midwestern University's eight-day Health Careers Institute for High School Students, which will take place on the University's Glendale Campus from July 9-18, 2015.
This FREE program, sponsored by Midwestern University and the BHSS Legacy Foundation, is open to high school juniors and seniors with a serious interest in science. Forty-eight participants will be selected based on their interest in the health professions, as demonstrated by school coursework, volunteer activities, high school transcript, a teacher recommendation letter, and an application essay.
