Mental Health Issues Put 34,500 on New York's No-Guns List

A newly created database of New Yorkers deemed too mentally unstable to carry firearms has grown to roughly 34,500 names, a previously undisclosed figure that has raised concerns among some mental health advocates that too many people have been categorized as dangerous.

 

The database, established in the aftermath of the mass shooting in 2012 at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., and maintained by the state Division of Criminal Justice Services, is the result of the Safe Act. Read more  >>

Medicare Patients Pay More At Rural Hospitals

An electrocardiogram (ECG), used to monitor heartbeats, will cost a Medicare patient about $5 at the average  hospital but nearly $33 at a rural, critical access hospital.


 
ECGs and nine other frequently provided outpatient services cost from two to six times more for Medicare patients at the nation's rural, critical access hospitals compared to other hospitals, according to a report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Inspector General. Educational Event: Preparing Your Community for Ebola

The Asian Pacific Community in Action (APCA) is partnering with The 3000 Club, Valley Home Care, Advance American, and Avision Healthcare to put together an educational event/press conference with leaders from the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) on preparing community members to protect health and safety should there be Ebola in the community.

Proposition 480: Both Sides of the Coin
On election day, Maricopa County residents will be asked to consider a $935 million bond authorization to support Maricopa Integrated Health System's (MIHS) efforts to expand healthcare services, medical education, and clinical training. This bond election is more commonly referred to as Proposition 480, and has been widely covered by the local media. The Maricopa County Medical Society has many members that stand to be directly impacted by the results of the bond election, and many have asked the Society to evaluate the pros and cons. CDC Fact Sheet: Tightened Guidance for U.S. Healthcare Workers on Personal Protective Equipment for Ebola
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is tightening previous infection control guidance for healthcare workers caring for patients with Ebola, to ensure there is no ambiguity.  The guidance focuses on specific personal protective equipment (PPE) health care workers should use and offers detailed step by step instructions for how to put the equipment on and take it off safely. 

Recent experience from safely treating patients with Ebola at Emory University Hospital, Nebraska Medical Center and National Institutes of Health Clinical Center are reflected in the guidance. Read more  >>
Identify, Isolate, Inform: CDC Releases New Guidance for Emergency Department Evaluation and Management for Patients Presenting with Possible Ebola Virus
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new guidance for Emergency Departments (ED) on evaluating and managing patients presenting with possible Ebola Virus Disease. Because early symptoms of Ebola Virus Disease are similar to other febrile illnesses, triage and evaluation processes in the ED should consider and systematically assess patients for the possibility of the disease. Read more  >>
 
 
Providers Eligible to Receive No-Cost Assistance to Improve Chronic Disease Management Through Health Information Technology
On August 1, 2014, Health Services Advisory Group, Inc. (HSAG)-the Medicare Quality Innovation Network-Quality Improvement Organization (QIN-QIO) for Arizona-launched its five-year quality-improvement contract with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to improve the health of communities, reduce health disparities, and promote the effective prevention of chronic disease through meaningful use of HIT. For providers seeking to learn and implement best practices for cardiovascular health and diabetes control, while integrating HIT for improved patient outcomes and CMS quality reporting initiatives, HSAG is enrolling interested physicians and hospitals for no-cost training and consulting. UA Valley Fever Center for Excellence Marks Valley Fever Awareness Week, Nov. 8 - 16, 2014
The University of Arizona Valley Fever Center for Excellence will host free events in Tucson and Phoenix for the public and health professionals in observance of the 12th annual Valley Fever Awareness Week, Nov. 8-16, recently proclaimed by Gov. Jan Brewer "in recognition of the outstanding treatment and research conducted by the Valley Fever Center for Excellence at the University of Arizona, its new clinical center at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, and for the advances in Valley Fever education and public health by the Arizona Department of Health Services."

The events provide opportunities to hear experts and ask questions about Valley Fever (Coccidioidomycosis), which primarily is a disease of the lungs common in the Southwestern United States and Northwestern Mexico. Read more  >>
Further Expansion of Dengue Fever Towards the Mexico-Arizona Border
For the first time, there are reports of dengue fever near the northern border of Sonora, Mexico and Arizona. Cases are under investigation. Basic Health Program Funding Methodology Proposed Notice
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a proposed notice establishing the methodology for determining federal funding for the Basic Health Program in program year 2016. The Basic Health Program provides states with the option to establish a health benefits coverage program for lower-income individuals as an alternative to Health Insurance Marketplace coverage under the Affordable Care Act. This voluntary program enables states to create a health benefits program for residents with incomes that are too high to qualify for Medicaid through Medicaid expansion in the Affordable Care Act, but are in the lower income bracket to be eligible to purchase coverage through the Marketplace. This proposed notice is substantially the same as the final notice for program year 2015. Read more   >>
New Frontiers in Geriatrics: From Prevention to Intervention and Beyond

St. Luke's Medical Center's Chief of Cardiology First in Western United States to Use New Drug-Coated Balloon to Re-Open Blocked Leg Arteries
Richard Heuser, M.D., FACC, chief of cardiology at St. Luke's Medical Center, is the first physician in the western United States to utilize the first and only FDA-approved drug-coated angioplasty balloon catheter to re-open blocked arteries in the leg that are narrowed or blocked as a result of peripheral arterial disease (PAD). UACC and Bio5 Researcher Awarded $1.59 Million NCI Grant to Study Drug Resistance in Lymphoma Tumor Treatment
Jonathan H. Schatz, MD, was recently awarded a 5-year, $1.59 million grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to study ways to effectively combat drug resistance when treating lymphoma - a study that may have wide-ranging impact when it comes to treating a variety of cancers.

The study, titled "A New Treatment Paradigm for ALK-Driven Cancers Exploiting Oncogene Overdose" officially began Sept. 19 and will run through 2019. Dr. Schatz and his team will examine growth mechanisms of tumors driven by anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) and how they develop resistance to treatment. Read more  >> 
NLM Georgia Biomedical Informatics Course
April 12 - 18, 2015

The National Library of Medicine and Robert B. Greenblatt, M.D. Library, Georgia Regents University will host the NLM Georgia Biomedical Informatics Course. This will offer participants a week-long immersive experience in biomedical informatics and provides continuing education to healthcare professionals and librarians interested in the application of computer technologies to medicine. The course will be held at Brasstown Valley in north Georgia twice a year.

The course will provide attendees a diverse set of skills and experiences incorporating concepts, theories and building blocks of biomedical informatics; ability to use informatics for solving current health care challenges; application and policies related to computer technologies and information science; hands-on experience during evening workshops; and networking with nationally known bioinformatics educators and thought leaders. 

Physician Retraining and Reentry: Empowering Retired and Inactive Physicians to Help Resolve the Nation's Growing PCP Shortage
Created in collaboration with UC San Diego school of Medicine faculty, Physician Retraining and Reentry (PRR) is an online educational program to help solve the nation's growing shortage of primary care physicians. PRR accomplishes this goal by empowering experienced retired or inactive doctors with the tools needed to secure primary care positions in understaffed health centers across the country.

The PRR curriculum consists of 15 online courses that cover a wide range of critical subject matter. Participants are able to work through each course at an individualized pace. Read more  >>
