As Medical Imaging Moves from 2-D to 3-D, FDA Rushes to Keep Up
| |
Written by Mohana Ravindranath, published in The Washington Post.
At the Food and Drug Administration, a small team of scientists is investigating how 3-D imaging - the technology used to create more realistic animations in video games and movies - could transform medical screening devices.
The scientists are focused on early breast cancer detection; in a process known as tomosynthesis, new screening machines take low-dose X-rays from various angles, overlaying them to produce a 3-D rendering of a patient's breast. Traditional mammograms create a 2-D image, and cannot show cancers hidden by overlapping tissue, according to the FDA, which last week released a consumer update on the new technology to coincide with the start of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Dallas Hospital Learned Its Ebola Protocols While Struggling to Save Mortally Ill Patient
| |
Written by Amy Ellis Nutt, Abby Phillip and Joel Achenbach, published in The Washington Post.
The hospital that treated Ebola victim Thomas Eric Duncan had to learn on the fly how to control the deadly virus, adding new layers of protective gear for workers in what became a losing battle to keep the contagion from spreading, a top official with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday.
"They kept adding more protective equipment as the patient [Duncan] deteriorated. They had masks first, then face shields, then the positive-pressure respirator. They added a second pair of gloves," said Pierre Rollin, a CDC epidemiologist. Read more >>

| Valley Fever Drug Receives Fast-Track Designation by the FDA | | |
A potentially curative anti-Valley Fever drug has been given a boost in its development by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The University of Arizona has received word that its request has been granted to designate nikkomycin Z (NikZ) as a "qualifying infectious disease product" (QIDP). NikZ is an antifungal drug that the UA has been helping to move into clinical trials and eventually to help patients. The UA has licensed development rights to Valley Fever Solutions, Inc. (VFS), a small start-up business in Tucson.
"Getting a QIDP designation is huge for our program," said John Galgiani, MD, director of the UA Valley Fever Center for Excellence, project leader for the NikZ development team and chief medical officer for VFS. "It makes NikZ much more attractive to investors because of the added protection and other benefits that come with this designation." Read more >> |
