Too Many People Die in Hospital Instead of Home. Here's Why
| |
Written by Fred Mogul, published in Kaiser Health News.
It was September 2012 and it was life-long smoker Paula Faber's third cancer in a decade, but she did not hesitate.
"She was going to fight it every inch of the way," says her husband Ron.
By August 2013 after much fighting, Paula died at age 72. Ron now regrets the intervening 11 months of chemotherapy, radiation, painkillers and side effects that reduced his wife to 67 pounds of frayed nerves. Instead, the pain could have been managed so she could focus on quality of life. Read more >>

UA Researcher: Medicaid Reimbursements May Affect Cancer Screening Rates Among Beneficiaries
| |
A recent study has found that in states with higher Medicaid payments for office visits, Medicaid beneficiaries were more likely to be screened for breast, cervical and colorectal cancer. Published early online in Cancer, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the findings may help policy makers address barriers to access to care and improve the use of recommended cancer-screening services.
Michael Halpern, MD, PhD, MPH, an associate professor and chair of the public health policy and management section at the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, and his former colleagues at RTI International, analyzed 2007 Medicaid data from 46 states and Washington, DC Read more >>

Phoenix has one of the worse physician shortages in the nation, according to a recent BetterDoctor.com ranking.
But with medical students facing huge debt loads, many aren't too inclined to choose to go into primary care because primary care physicians don't make as much money as specialists, such as surgeons. Read more >> |

| Dying in America is Harder than it Has to Be, IOM Says | | |
It is time for conversations about death to become a part of life. That is one of the themes of a 500-page report, titled "Dying in America," released by the Institute of Medicine (IOM).
The report suggests that the first end-of-life conversation could coincide with a cherished American milestone: getting a driver's license at age sixteen, the first time a person weighs what it means to be an organ donor. Follow-up conversations with a counselor, nurse or social worker should come at other points early in life, such as turning eighteen or getting married. The idea, according to the IOM, is to "help normalize the advance care planning process by starting early, to identify a healthcare agent, and to obtain guidance in the event of a rare catastrophic event."
