CVS Stops Selling Tobacco, Offers Quit-Smoking Programs

Written by Jayne O'Donnell and Laura Unger, published in USA Today.

CVS Caremark plans to stop selling tobacco products in all of its stores starting Wednesday - a move health experts hope will be followed by other major drugstore chains.

CVS announced in February that it planned to drop tobacco by Oct. 1 as the sales conflicted with its health care mission. To bolster its image as a healthcare company, CVS will announce a corporate name change to CVS Health. Retail stores will still be called CVS/Pharmacy.

CVS is the first large drugstore chain to stop tobacco sales. Read more  >>

Open Payments Database: Despite Criticism, Still On Track to Let the Sunshine In

Written by Shefali Luthra, published in Kaiser Health News.

Despite technical glitches, the federal "Open Payments System" database - which tracks pharmaceutical company contributions to doctors and teaching hospitals - remains on track for its scheduled Sept. 30 launch, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) confirmed.

It was mandated by a sunshine act included in the federal health law seeking to ease concerns that pharmaceutical interests could wield excessive influence over health providers. The database includes payments for research, gifts, meals or speaker fees. Consumer advocates have long called for the public display of such information, arguing that it is key to ensuring doctors don't prescribe certain drugs out of financial incentives or loyalty. Read more  >>

Screening for Breast Cancer
Written by Dr. Ian Grant Whyte, MD, member of the Maricopa County Medical Society

There is irrefutable scientific evidence that the mammography should begin at age 40 and continue annually, according to Professor Daniel Kopans of Harvard Radiology. However, many doctors are following the recommendations of the United States Preventive Service Task Force (USPSTF) recommending the mammography should begin at age 50 and that doctors are not to teach their patients the importance of breast self-examination.

It is my opinion that far too many women die unnecessarily every year from breast cancer. There are many causes for this, but primarily I divide the responsibility equally between doctors and their women patients. Read more  >>
