Health Law Spurs Focus on Faster Drug Development

Imagine if scientists could recreate you - or at least part of you - on a chip.

That might help doctors identify drugs that would help heal patients faster, bypassing the sometimes painful trial-and-error process and hefty healthcare costs that accompany arriving at the right treatment.

Right now, at the University of California, Berkeley, researchers in bioengineer Kevin Healy's lab are working to make that happen. Funded under a provision of the health law, they're trying to grow human organ tissue, like heart and liver, on tiny chips. Read more  >>

New Obama Plan Calls for Implanted Computer Chips to Help U.S. Troops Heal

Written by Dan Lamothe, published in The Washington Post

When President Obama on Tuesday highlighted 19 executive actions he says he is taking to improve the mental health of U.S. troops and veterans, one of them centered on a particularly novel effort: The development of new computer chips designed to modulate the nervous system to help with everything from arthritis to post-traumatic stress.

The project is headed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, a Pentagon agency that develops a variety of high-tech equipment for the U.S. military. Read more  >>

Medicare Testing Payment Options that Could End Observation Care Penalties
Written by Susan Jaffe, published in Kaiser Health News

Medicare officials have allowed patients at dozens of hospitals participating in pilot projects across the country to be exempted from the controversial requirement that limits nursing home coverage to seniors admitted to a hospital for at least three days.

The idea behind these experiments is to find out whether new payment arrangements with the hospitals and other healthcare providers that drop the three-day rule can reduce costs or keep them the same while improving the quality of care. They are conducted under a provision of the Affordable Care Act that created the Center for medicare and medicaid Innovations to develop ways of improving Medicare. Read more  >>

Value of Screening Pelvic Exam for Women Debated
The American College of Physicians (ACP) has issued new clinical guidelines recommending against screening pelvic examination in asymptomatic, nonpregnant, adult women. The college describes the recommendation as strong, with moderate-quality evidence.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) also has reservations about the ACP clinical guidelines. In a press release, ACOG states that it stands by its current guidelines for well-women visits, which includes pelvic examinations. The college believes the choice to perform pelvic examinations is one that should be made on the basis of a woman's individual needs, requests, and preferences.

Updated Recommendations on the Use of Meningococcal Vaccines
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has updated its meningococcal vaccine recommendations to include guidance on use of meningococcal vaccines in infants. Read more  >>
Blues Go Public With Data Exchange
Written by Anthony Brino, published in Healthcare IT News

Two large health insurers are hoping a new "public utility" patient data sharing service will improve one of the most pernicious problems in American healthcare.

Blue Shield of California and WellPoint, the parent of Anthem Blue Cross, are investing a combined $80 million to start the California Integrated Data Exchange, as a "next generation" health information exchange service for providers, payers and patients.

Dubbed Cal INDEX, the service will offer California physicians, nurses and hospitals "a unified statewide source of integrated patient information." It will be one of the largest exchanges in the country, starting off with the health records of a quarter of the state population, the companies say. Read more  >>
