The Arizona Department of Health Services has released a manual for physicians about Arizona's infectious diseases. This includes information on Coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever), Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Plague, Tularemia, Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, State Reporting Requirements and Expedited Partner Therapy. Find the manual here  >>

What 3D Printing Means for Healthcare

Medicare Experiment Could Signal Sea Change for Hospice

Diane Meier is the director of the Center to Advance Palliative Care, a national organization that aims to increase the number of palliative care programs in hospitals and elsewhere for patients with serious illnesses. Meir is also a professor of geriatrics and palliative medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. She spoke with Michelle Andrews of Kaiser Health News about a recently launched pilot program under the health law that allows hospice patients participating in the continue to receive life-prolonging treatment. Specialty Care is a Challenge in Some ACA Plans
Primary care doctors have reported problems making referrals for patients who have purchased some of the cheaper plans from the federal insurance marketplace. Complaints about narrow networks with too few doctors have attracted the attention of federal regulators and have even prompted lawsuits.
 
But they're also causing headaches in the day-to-day work of doctors and clinics. "The biggest problem we've run into is figuring out what specialists take a lot of these plans," said Dr. Charu Sawhney of Houston. Read more  >>

Hour-Long Home Coaching Greatly Decreases
Re-Admission and Healthcare Costs for Medicare Patients
A new study in Journal of General Internal Medicine reports that an hour-long educational coaching session and two or three follow-up phone calls after a hospital stay reduced re-admission odds by 39% among Medicare patients. The study also found that the average cost of care was reduced by $3,700 per patient for those patients who received the education session versus those who did not. Read more  >>
Trustees Report Shows Continued Reduce Cost Growth, Longer Medicare Solvency
The Medicare Trustees today projected that the trust fund that finances Medicare's hospital insurance coverage will remain solvent until 2030, four years beyond what was projected in last year's report. Due in part to cost controls implemented in the Affordable Care Act, per capita spending is projected to continue to grow slower than the overall economy for the next several years. Read more  >>

Appeals Court Split on Legality of Subsidies for Affordable Care Act
Two U.S. appeals courts Tuesday reached opposite conclusions about the legality of subsidies in the Affordable Care Act, a key part of the law that brings down the cost of coverage for millions of Americans. 

In Washington, a three-judge panel at the U.S. Appeals Court for the D.C. Circuit ruled that the Internal Revenue Service lacked the authority to allow subsidies to be provided in exchanges not run by the states. Read more  >>

Medicare Modifies Controversial Hospice Drug Rule
In response to strong criticism, Medicare officials are modifying rules intended to prevent the agency from paying twice for the same prescriptions for seniors receiving hospice care.

Under the rules that took effect in May, hospice patients or their families could not fill prescriptions through their Part D drug plans until first confirming that the prescriptions were not covered by hospice providers. Drugs related to palliative and comfort care are supposed to be covered under the fixed rate payments to the hospice. Read more  >>
