Big Cyber Hack of Health Records is "Only a Matter of Time"

The health world is flirting with disaster, say the experts who monitor crime in cyberspace. A hack that exposes the medical and financial records of tens of thousands of patients is coming, they say - it's only a matter of when.
As health data becomes increasingly digital and the use of electronic health records booms, thieves see patient records in a vulnerable healthcare system as attractive bait, according to experts interviewed by POLITICO. On the black market, a full identity profile contained in a single record can bring as much as $500.

| UA Discovery Shows Curcumin Blocks the Metastasis of Cancer by a Novel Mechanism | | |
A team of researchers led by the University of Arizona Steele Children's Research Center discovered that curcumin-the bioactive molecule derived from the spice turmeric-blocks the protein cortactin in colon cancer.
Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States and the third most common cancer in men and women. When cancer metastasizes to other organs, a patient's chances of survival are greatly diminished. Thus, finding novel ways to prevent cancer metastasis remains an urgent need. Read more >> |

| CMS Fraud Prevention System Identified or Prevented $210 Million in Improper Medicare Payments in Second Year of Operations | |
In its second year of operations, CMS' state-of-the-art Fraud Prevention System, that employs advanced predictive
analytics, identified or prevented more than $210 million in improper Medicare Fee-For-Service payments, double the
previous year. It also resulted in CMS taking action against 938 providers and suppliers, according to a report sent to Congress.
The Fraud Prevention System is a key element of the anti-fraud strategy that has led to a record $19.2 billion in fraud recoveries over the previous five years. The Fraud Prevention System uses predictive algorithms and other sophisticated analytics to analyze billing patterns against every Medicare Fee-For-Service claim. Read more >>

| Adults With Serious Mental Illnesses Face 80% Unemployment | | |

Employment rates for people with a serous mental illness are dismally low and getting worse, according to a report from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Just 17.8 percent of people receiving public mental health services were employed in 2012 - down from 23 percent in 2003. "It isn't surprising," says Sita Diehl, director of state policy at NAMI and author of the report. The problem has less to do with the workers themselves, she says, and more with the organizations that provide services for people with serious mental illness. Read more >> |

| UA College of Medicine - Tucson Earns Accreditation Through 2022 | | |
The medical education program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson, designed to train the next generation of highly skilled physicians dedicated to improving patient care and advancing the state of medical knowledge, has earned accreditation through 2022, a full eight-year term.
The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the accreditation authority for MD programs in the United States and Canada, announced the decision and identified a number of institutional strengths within the college that are distinctive and worthy of emulation. Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell announced new prospective awardees to test innovative care models, bringing the total amount of funding to as much as $360 million for 39 recipients spanning 27 states and the District of Columbia. | CMS Proposes Payment Changes for Medicare Home Health Agencies for 2015 | |
The Centers of Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced proposed changes to the medicare home health prospective payment system (HHPPS) for calendar year (CY) 2015 that would foster greater efficiency, flexibility, payment accuracy, and improved quality. Based on the most recent data, CMS estimates that approximately 3.5 million beneficiaries received home health services from nearly 12,000 home health agencies, costing Medicare approximately $18 billion in 2013.
