Retooling Hospitals, One Data Point at a Time

When a car rolls off on assembly line, the automaker knows exactly what parts, labor and facilities cost. Not so in healthcare, and now some health executives are trying to change that. Although U.S. hospitals account for the single largest chunk of the nation's $2.7 trillion in health spending, few of them can say how much it actually costs them to care for every patient they admit." President's Message: The Metamorphosis of Medical Education
Miriam Anand, MD

Medical education in Maricopa County is entirely different now than it was when I was applying over 20 years ago. At that time there were no medical schools in Phoenix and the only school in the state was the University of Arizona in Tucson. All of the applicants in the state were vying for one of the c. 150 available seats. Fast forward to today and we now have the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University, the Univerity of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix, and A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine, with Mayo Clinic opening their Arizona campus soon. In addition, Creighton University School of Medicine has a clinical campus at St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Center. This certainly has created exponentially greater opportunities for students from Arizona, and particularly from Maricopa County, to pursue their dream of going to medical school close to home. The greater hope for our state, however, is that this will result in an increased number of physicians in Arizona. Unfortunately, the rate limiting factor seems to be the availability of postgraduate training spots. Over 50% of this year's graduating class from the U of A Phoenix campus, for example, have matched out of state. The challenges of keeping these students here still lie ahead of us. Read more  >>

New "Flight Simulator" Technology Gives NYU Langone Neurosurgeons a Peek Inside Brain Before Surgery
The New York University Langone Medical Center is now using a novel technology that serves as a "flight simulator" for neurosurgeons, allowing them to rehearse complicated brain surgeries before making an actual incision on a patient.

Te new simulator, called the Surgical Rehearsal Platform (SRP), creates an individualized walk-through for neurosurgeons based on 3D imaging taken from the patient's CT and MRI scans. Surgeons then plan and rehearse the surgeries using the unique software, which combines life-like tissue reaction with accurate modeling of surgical tools and clamps, to enable them to navigate multiple-angled models of a patient's brain and vasculature. 15th Annual Southern Hospital Medicine Conference: Collaborative Solutions Across Healthcare
October 9-11, 2014
Atlanta, Georgia
Caring for hospitalized patients requires an integrative knowledge of various specialty fields of medicine. A working knowledge of recent advances in the most common diagnoses is essential to efficiently and effectively manage hospitalized patients.

This conference provides practicing physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, pharmacists and other healthcare providers with newest concepts in advancing healthcare delivery in the hospital setting. It seeks to update the newest advances in clinical disease management, practice management, quality improvement, pharmacology, medical technology, evidence-based standards of care, and practice guidelines.

CMS Initiative Helps People Make the Most of Their New Health Coverage
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) launched a national initiative "From Coverage to Care" (C2C), which is designed to help answer questions that people may have about their new health coverage, to help them make the most of their new benefits, including taking full advantage of primary care and preventive services. It also seeks to give healthcare providers the tools they need to promote patient engagement.

"Helping to ensure that new healthcare consumers know about the benefits available through their coverage, and how to use it appropriately to obtain primary care and preventative services is essential to improving the health of the nation and reducing healthcare costs," said Dr. Cara V. James, director of the CMS Office of Minority Health. Dr. James noted that, "to achieve these goals, we need to make sure that people who are newly covered know that their coverage can help them stay healthy, not just get better if they get sick." Read more  >>

What Impact Will Hepatitis C Drugs Have on Medical Costs? Look Here
Written by Ed Silverman, published in the Wall Street Journal

The answer to this question has been the subject of heated debate thanks to the Sovaldi treatment sold by Gilead Sciences. The medication can cure 90 percent of the patients who have the most common form of the affliction, and costs $1,000 a day for a 12-week course, or $84,000 for one patient... For months, state Medicaid programs and private payers have blanched at the cost. Read more  >>

Insurer Begins Huge Palliative Care Program
"Person-centered care" is the buzz phrase floating around the healthcare industry, and a Pacific Northwest-based giant insurer thinks it has hit the mark with a new palliative care program coming this summer. Cambia Health Solutions, which includes Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield, will offer training to providers and additional benefits for policyholders: more than 2.2 million members in Cambia's family of health plan companies in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Utah.

Palliative care improves the quality of life by managing pain and other problems for people who have serious life-threatening medical conditions. It differs from hospice care, especially because patients do not necessarily have less than six months to live. Read more  >>
