| From the Executive Director: Random Thoughts... | |
| |
Jay Conyers, PhD
|
Get to know a little more about Jay Conyers, PhD, some of the lessons he has learned so far in his career, and how he is applying that knowledge to his position at the MCMS.
I'm not a doctor. For nearly a decade, however, I was constantly explaining myself to others who thought, because of my job, that I was. So much so that I became all too comfortable using the familiar catchphrase from a character, Dr. Cliff Warner, on the soap opera All My Children, who helped millions of Americans "play doctor at home" when he plugged for Vicks cough syrup in their commercial by stating, "I"m not a doctor, but I play one on TV." | Google Glass Enters the Operating Room
Before scrubbing in on a recent Tuesday morning, Dr. Selene Parekh, an orthopedic surgeon at Duke Medical Center, slipped on a pair of sleek, black glasses - Google Glass, the wearable computer with a built-in camera and monitor.
He gave the Internet-connected glasses a voice command to start recording and turned to the middle-aged motorcycle crash victim on the operating table. he chiseled through bone, repaired a broken metatarsal and drilled a metal plate into the patient's foot.
At Duke and other hospitals, a growing number of surgeons are using Google Glass to stream their operations online, float medical images in their field of view, and hold video consultations with colleagues as they operate. Read more >> |

| "Nothing is Broken": For an Injured Doctor, Quality-Focused Care Misses the Mark | | |
Written by Dr. Charlotte Yeh, Chief Medical Officer, AARP Services, Inc., published in HealthAffairs.
As a medical professional who became an accident victim and then a trauma patient, I was a participant-observer in emergency care, with a big-picture window into how well our healthcare system does or doesn't work. There's just something about being boarded on a gurney in a hospital hallway for fifteen hours that gets one thinking about paradigm shifts.
In my case, I was struck by the uneven nature of my care, marked by an overreliance on testing and a narrow focus on limited quality metrics such as pain management or catheter care processes. Looking back, I believe that this approach fostered an inattention to my overall well-being. Instead of feeling like a connected patient at the center of care, I felt processed and disengaged. This is disconcerting, especially at a time when patient-centered care-that is, care delivered with me, not to me or for me-is becoming the new normal.
It is time to frame a new paradigm of care, a consumer-driven approach that concentrates attention on the art of medicine. This might begin with a reinvigorated focus on patient-centered care and mastering the skills of listening, empathy, and patient partnership.
The Oath of Maimonides, a code for the medical calling, offers a hopeful note about the physician: "Today he can discover his errors of yesterday, and tomorrow he can obtain a new light on what he thinks himself sure of today." Should this wisdom prevail, the next generation of quality measurement may strike that elusive balance between the clinical and the personal, and the good of the patient will always guide the care we deliver. | Poorer Health of Surgery Patients on Medicaid May Alter Law's Bottom Line

- Handling of the Tax Identification Number (TIN) and National Provider Identification (NPI)
