CMS and ONC Release NPRM Allowing CEHRT Flexibility and Extending Stage 2
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) released a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) that would allow providers participating in the EHR Incentive Programs to use the 2011 Edition of certified electronic health record technology (CEHRT) for calendar and fiscal year 2014.

The NPRM will grant flexibility to providers who are experiencing difficulties fully implementing 2014 Edition CEHRT to attest this year. The proposed rule would allow providers to use EHRs that have been certified under the 2011 Edition, a combination of the 2011 and 2014 Editions, or the 2014 Edition. Read more >>
Honor Roll Program Update: New Tools for Managing Valley Fever
Written by John N. Galgiani, MD, Director of the Valley Fever Center for Excellence at the University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine Tucson and Phoenix and a member of the Maricopa County Medical Society.

Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis) is one of the three targeted public health issues by the Maricopa County Medical Society (MCMS) Honor Roll Program.

With the Honor Roll Program, we hope to recognize those clinicians who master a basic understanding of Valley Fever, seek to diagnose it in their patients, and regularly encourage other clinicians to do the same. That effort received an infusion of new information April 5 of this year as the result of a day-long conference devoted entirely to Valley Fever, the 58th Annual Meeting of the Coccidioidomycosis Study Group, held on the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix campus.

In this article, I have selected a few of the topics that were discussed because they should be of general interest to members:
  • NIH and CDC are committed to study the benefits of early treatment of Valley Fever pneumonia.
  • A structured approach to patients with protracted fatigue following uncomplicated coccidioidal pneumonia.
  • Back to the future: coccidioidal skin testing to be commercially available again this year.
All three of these topics primarily involve patients with the commonest and usually self-limited syndromes of Valley Fever. That they were all addressed at the same one-day meeting reflects the growing awareness of this illness within the general practices in Maricopa County and other highly endemic regions within the southwest. by joining the MCMS Honor Roll Program, clinicians are pledging to include their own practices in this expanding awareness, thereby helping to raise the community's overall standard of care.

CMS Information on Open Payments Registration
Phase 1 of provider registration for Open Payments begins June 1, 2014. Physicians and teaching hospitals that want to participate in Open Payments need to register in CMS' Enterprise Portal. The benefit of registration, although voluntary, is that it allow providers to review data that industry has reported and dispute any inaccuracies. Phase 2 of provider registration begins in July and physicians and teaching hospitals can also begin to review and dispute the data at this time. Read more >>
Public Health: Empower Your Patients with Tools to Care for Themselves
Chronic Disease and Self-Management
Written by Dr. Bob England, Director of the Maricopa County Deptartment of Public Health and a member of the MCMS

Between the obesity epidemic, all the related consequences of poor nutrition and lack of physical activity, and the aging of our population, chronic diseases are steadily increasing. Much of this increase in chronic disease is already destined - no matter what we do in prevention; trying to reverse the population-wide effects of past behaviors is like trying to stop a freight train.

Thus, many of you are going to be stuck with managing an increased burden of chronic disease for the foreseeable future. We've all been taught that it is crucial to educate our patients on how to take care of themselves and handle their conditions, but the pace of clinical practice makes that difficult to achieve in a meaningful way. We all know how hard it is for our patients to adopt and maintain healthier behaviors, and the reality is that it's not possible for you and your office staff to provide all the teaching, coaching and support they may need. The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) is one tool you can use with your patients.

In combination with your ongoing clinical care, this program helps participants reduce pain, depression, fear, and frustration; improve mobility and exercise; increase energy; and boost confidence in their ability to manage their condition.

To learn more about how to offer CDSMP in your office, or refer your patients into a program, call MaryAnn Brown at 602.372.4424 or send her an email. You can also visit the Arizona Health Matters: Maricopa County Web site.
"Medical Privacy of Protected Health Information" Fact Sheet Available Now
The "Medical Privacy of Protected Health Information" Fact Sheet is available in downloadable format. It includes information on accessing the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) HIPAA online resources.
Telemedicine Convention in Phoenix
A patient admitted to a rural Emergency Department with stroke symptoms is immediately connected via an audio/video system to a stroke specialist hundreds of miles away. The specialist conducts an assessment and determines that the patient should be given the clot-busting drug TPA. The patient survives the stroke and recuperates quickly. Without telemedicine and the timely intervention, this patient's chances of survival would have diminished significantly.

Tele-stroke programs like this are only one of the many telemedicine and telehealth services that reduce barriers to care, improve patient access to specialists, help medical practitioners expand their practice reach and save patients from having to trael or be transported to receive expert specialty care.

To help connect telemedicine and telehealth medical specialty providers with healthcare systems that need their services, the award-winning Arizona Telemedicine Program (ATP) is organizing the first annual Telemedicine and Telehealth Service Provider Showcase (SPSTM), to be held October 6-7 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Phoenix, Arizona.

Pathway Scholars Program Created for Aspiring Arizona Medical Students
The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix is finalizing the inaugural cohort of students for the Pathway Scholars Program. The one-year graduate certificate of study is designed to give students who may have been under-resourced, for a variety of reasons, a unique opportunity to prove their ability to succeed in a medical school environment.
