President's Message: Patient Empowerment...It Starts With Us
Miriam Anand, MD
President, MCMS
My previous articles have dealt with many of the changes that we as physicians have seen in medicine, legislative and otherwise, that have impacted how we provide care to patients. Now more than ever, patients will need to play a greater role in their own healthcare, changing how patients traditionally approached medical care. In addition to the fact that many patients have to pay more for their healthcare with higher deductibles and co-pays, we physicians have less time to spend with them, meaning that we have to be able to make the most of that time. It is therefore important that we are spending that time getting an accurate history and educating the patient on diagnostic and treatment options and not trying to figure out what the "little white pill" that they take for their hypertension is. Patients must therefore be empowered and understand their role in helping us help them.
A Taste of Asia 2014 Honoring Dr. Anthony Yeung
Join us on Saturday, May 10, 2014 to honor one of our own, Dr. Anthony Yeung, at the Asian Pacific Community in Action (APCA) annual fundraiser. This year, APCA will be honoring Dr. Yeung, former President of the Society and a true healthcare hero in our community. Dr. Yeung is a world-renowned spine surgeon who developed the YESS minimally invasive spinal diagnostic and surgical procedure. He is also a gracious philanthropist - recently donating $2.5M to a spine center at the University of New Mexico.

Eligible Professionals Must Start Medicare EHR Participation in 2014 to Earn Incentives
If you are an eligible professional for the Medicare Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Program, 2014 is the last year you can start participation in the Medicare EHR Incentive Program in order to receive incentive payments. Eligible professionals who begin participation in the Medicare EHR Incentive Program after 2014 will not be able to earn an incentive payment for that year or any subsequent year of participation. If you choose to participate in the Medicare EHR Incentive Program for the first time in 2014, you should begin your 90-day reporting period no later than July 1, 2014 and submit attestation by October 1, 2014 in order to avoid the payment adjustment in 2015.
University of Arizona Steele Center to Study Preventing Deadly Intestinal Disease in Premature Babies

A researcher at the University of Arizona Steele Children's Research Center plans to measure bile acid levels in premature babies to predict and prevent Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC), an intestinal disease that is fatal to nearly one in five infants who develop the most severe form.

Melissa Halpern, PhD, associate professor, said NEC is a potentially deadly inflammatory gastrointestinal disease that afflicts approximately 9,000 premature infants in the United States every year. The cause is unknown and no treatments for the disease exist.

Coming Soon to Your Mailbox - May Round-up!
Public Health: You've been taught that it is crucial to educate patients on how to handle chronic conditions, but the pace of clinical practice makes that difficult to achieve in a meaningful way. The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program is one tool you can use with your patients. Page 18.

Patient Empowerment:
Family medicine physician, Dr. Kimberly Shipman, builds her practice on a foundation of patient education and empowerment. Page 27.

Special Feature - A Tribute to a Healthcare Pioneer: Wallace A. Reed, MD: Compassionate, Generous. Dedicated. Loved. Beloved. To honor Dr. Reed's legacy, Round-up has re-produced his obituary and compiled the thoughts of his colleagues and friends. Page 14.

Honor Roll Update: Valley Fever is one of the three targeted public health issues by the MCMS Honor Roll Program. That effort received an infusion of new information April 5th of this year as the result of a day-long conference devoted entirely to Valley Fever. Read Dr. John N. Galgiani's summary. Page 20.

Patient Empowerment - Technology: The Internet, patient portals, e-tool apps and social media have transformed the patient-physician relationship. Many patients explore treatment options, risks, benefits and expected outcomes before their exam. The evidence is clear: people who are actively involved in their health and healthcare have better outcomes and lower costs. Page 30.

Patient Empowerment - A Consultant's Perspective: More than ever, brokers are seeing patients do their due diligence to ensure a hospital is a contracted in-network or an Rx is on the formulary. Are you open to this change in dynamic with your patients? Page 36.

New Arizona Law Assures Insurance Navigators Can't Have Criminal Background

For those worried that standards were too low for navigators who help the uninsured find health coverage on the exchange,
Governor Jan Brewer signed the Navigator Bill into law.

The goal is to keep criminals from gaining access to personal information of those seeking health coverage under the Arizona Insurance Marketplace, created under the Affordable Care Act.

2014 Dues Are Now Due
As a dues-driven organization, each and every one of our members contributes to our operation. Without the dues we collect through membership, we are unable to effectively run our patient referral line, print and distribute our magazine, and organize community events.

Why should you renew?
In 2014 we have put forth a lot of effort to re-vamp our magazine, Round-up, providing content that is more relevant to the landscape of medicine. Making the magazine into a more dynamic content resource is critical for us in interacting with our members. We have also engaged in more community activities, and are in the midst of building our social media footprint. Revamping our website to provide you with more tools and information, and a new look and feel, and actively engaging in the policy-making process at the Arizona Legislature are also value propositions we bring to our membership. Finally, for actively practicing members we are building analytics around our referral line to ensure that we are providing real value to our members, and communicating that value to you.

If you have overlooked your 2014 membership dues, it's easy to renew:
  • Renew online by clicking here
  • Mail a check to Maricopa County Medical Society, 326 E. Coronado Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85004
  • Make a payment over the phone by calling Candice Scheibel directly: 602.251.2363
In order to continue serving our membership throughout the year, on May 1st we will be forced to suspend the Round-up subscription and other membership perks for unpaid members.

We appreciate and value your contributions to the Society, and hope that you will consider continuing your membership with our organization.
