| From the Executive Director: Moving Full Steam Ahead | |
 | |
Jay Conyers, PhD Executive Director
|
As we move into spring and with temperatures already on the rise, so is activity at the Society. We set out in 2014 to expand our role in the community, and I wrote about some of our plans in the February Round-up. We're full steam ahead with our modernization strategy, and have been putting in a lot of effort to retool the magazine in recent months. Hopefully you see a difference already. We have also focused on becoming a media authority, and being recognized as a resource for the community.

| Measles in Maricopa County | |
On April 7th 2014, a confirmed case of measles was reported to Maricopa County Department of Public Health. The unvaccinated individual recently returned from a trip from Europe where measles has been circulating widely. This individual was in multiple public locations within Maricopa County and likely exposed others to measles.
Public locations of possible exposures as well as dates and times can be viewed here.
Prodrome symptoms of fever, cough, coryza, conjunctivitis in susceptible individuals from exposure to this case may surface as early as April 8th, with rash symptoms showing up by April 12th.
The Maricopa County Department of Public Health URGE the following steps:
- Implement airborne isolation protocols for all patients with rash illness presenting for healthcare until and unless an alternate firm diagnosis is obtained.
- Immediately evaluate hospitalized patients with rash illness for potential need for airborne isolation.
- Place surgical masks and signs at all hospital/healthcare entrances alerting anyone with cough, runny nose, red eyes, fever OR a rash illness to wear a mask BEFORE they enter a hospital/facility.
- Review immunity to measles for ALL healthcare workers.
- Consider asking all regular vendors and volunteers to present proof of immunity to measles prior to entering the facility.
Have clinicians consider measles in their differential diagnosis for all patients with a consistent prodrome and exposure or ANY rash illness and report all suspect cases to your Infection Preventionist and to Maricopa County Department of Public Health 602.506.6767 Mon-Fri 8am-5pm, or 602.747.7111 24/7 reporting line.
Additional information for physicians, including a Measles screening tool, English/Spanish educational posters, Measles description flyer and CDC guidelines are available at http://www.maricopa.gov/publichealth/Programs/Measles/

| Mercy Maricopa Integrated Care Now Coordinates Physical and Behavioral Health Services for AHCCCS SMI Patients | |
Mercy Maricopa Integrated Care now serves as the Regional Behavioral Health Authority (RBHA) for the greater Maricopa County region under a contract with the state. As a RBHA, it will provide managed care behavioral health services for its members, but it will also coordinate physical health services and behavioral health services for people with serious mental illness (SMI) who have AHCCCS coverage.
The goal of this new alignment is to "integrate" services for continuity of care and improve the outcomes of the people receiving care. As you may know, adults living with serious mental illness die on average 25 years earlier than other Americans, largely due to treatable medical conditions.
What you need to know:
- Your patients' Mercy Maricopa Health Plan will continue to be their AHCCCS Plan.
- Whether you are a primary care physician, specialist or surgeon, you are encouraged to continue to see your patients.
- If you are already a Mercy Care Plan provider in the Mercy Maricopa network, there are a few changes you need to make. Please call the Mercy Maricopa provider relations department at 1.800.564.5465 or go to the provider section of the Mercy Maricopa Web site if you have questions.
- If you are not currently a Mercy Care Plan provider, or have not yet joined the Mercy Maricopa network, they have an open period of 180 days, beginning April 1, for you to continue to see your patient. Their provider relations team would like to talk with you about joining the network.
If you have a patient who is in the Mercy Maricopa health plan and you have questions about their coverage, please call the Mercy Maricopa provider relations department at 1.800.564.5465 or visit them online.

Wallace A. Reed, MD
|
Dr. Wallace A. Reed, MD died on March 7, 2014 at the age of 97.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Maria. Dr. Reed was born in Covina, California and became a physician like his father and grandfather before him. He retired from anesthesiology in 1989.
His career spanned 45 years, and during that time he received many awards, served on many committees and helped influence healthcare legislation that protected the patient's and physicians' interests. Most notably, along with his business partner, he founded the first freestanding ambulatory surgical facilty. He was loved and beloved my many.
To honor Dr. Reed's legacy, Round-up will publish a tribute to him in the May 2014 issue. If you would like to contribute your thoughts or a dedication to Dr. Reed, please contact Jay Conyers at jconyers@mcmsonline.com or call 602.251.2361.
