Moving Full Steam Ahead

Jay Conyers, PhD MCMS Executive Director
As we move into spring and with temperatures already on the rise, so is activity at the Society. We set out in 2014 to expand our role in the community, and I wrote about some of our plans in the February Round-up.We're full steam ahead with our modernization strategy, and have been putting in a lot of effort to retool the magazine in recent months. Hopefully you see a difference already.

We have also focused on becoming a media authority, and being recognized as a resource for the community. On the front page of the March 15th Arizona Republic (Arizona Doctor licensing backlogged), the Society was quoted several times and spoke about the potential impact the situation has on doctors and patients.

Part of our modernization strategy was to engage our members more, and hopefully you all have noticed the surveys we've been rolling out most weeks, either through our email distribution, or via the InforMED Society e-newsletter. No one has their pulse on medicine in the community more so than our doctors, and knowing what you think about newsworthy topics is important for the Society, especially if we aim to promote policy that is consistent with our mission. On the Move

Are you moving on up to the East, West, North or South-side? Or moved in a different direction worth noting?

Have you recently taken on a new role at your practice, clinic or hospital? Recognized for excellence in delivering care? Accepted a new position within our community? Have you completed a new training or certification? Recently retired?

If so, we want to know! Please share with us your recent professional achievements, and we will share them with the rest of our members and readers and "connect our docs".

Practice Spotlight - New Round-up Feature Series

The Maricopa County Medical Society's Round-up is pleased to bring you a new feature series, "Practice Spotlight". Starting with the March 2014 issue and every month thereafter, we will spotlight a physician or practice that has made changes to their care model for the benefit of the patient.

If you would like to submit yourself or your practice for consideration, or would like to recommend another physician or practice group for our spotlight, please contact Jay Conyers at 602.251.2361 or jconyers@mcmsonline.com

AZ Medical Board Backlog: What are your thoughts?

On March 12, we sent a survey to the membership to gather your thoughts and experiences on the medical licensing process.

Since that distribution, MCMS Executive Director, Jay Conyers, was interviewed by Ken Altucker, Medical Reporter for the AZ Republic. Jay was quoted several time in the article on how this issue is impacting the physician community.

If you haven't yet shared your thoughts, we want to hear from you!

Email the Society mcms@mcmsonline.com or take our survey:

Have you or someone in your office applied for an initial license with the Arizona Medical Board within the last 24 months?

University of Arizona Leads Asthma Study with Tucson Unified School District and American Lung Association

Program will be implemented in 16 TUSD elementary schools beginning in the 2014-2015 school year.

Approximately 120,000 Arizona children have asthma. Asthma attacks lead to 3,000 hospitalizations each year, costing Arizonans approximately $24 million in direct medical costs.

Overall, the medical costs of children with asthma are double those of children without asthma. The greatest burden of asthma disproportionally falls upon low-income and minority children. One of the most important causes of poor asthma control is limited access to, and inconsistent use of, daily medications such as inhaled corticosteroids.

To address this public health issue, the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona has partnered with the American Lung Association in Arizona and the Tucson Unified School District to implement a school-based asthma program in selected elementary schools.

Former, Current Foster Youth Sought for Partnership Board

Each year, more than 700 Arizona young adults mark their 18th birthday in foster care without a permanent, stable family. Many of these youth find themselves jobless, without a place to live, transportation or a positive community of support.

A new initiative in Arizona aims to create better outcomes for these young people by getting input from those who have experienced firsthand the foster care system. The Arizona Youth Opportunities initiative is seeking a dozen former and current foster youth between the ages of 16 and 26 for its Arizona Youth Partnership Board. The board will help guide the new initiative. Besides identifying the greatest needs of youth aging out of foster care, board members will spread the word to other foster youth about services available to them.
