The ACA and Narrow Networks:
MCMS Members - Tell Us What YOU Think

While the Affordable Care Act (ACA) aims to provide better access to care, insurers have responded by altering existing networks or rolling out new plans that are financially appealing to customers, yet come with limitations that do exactly the opposite of what the ACA sets out to do.

Termed "narrow networks," these new plans limit the number of providers and care facilities that are accessible to the patients purchasing them through the ACA's consumer exchange. In fact, an estimated 70% of new plans offered through the exchange are considered narrow networks.

As consumers shop online for coverage, they seem to be drawn to these new plans with cheaper premiums, yet miss the fine print regarding the limited number of care providers accessible through these plans.  In some instances, such as New Hampshire, where nearly half of the state's hospitals are now inaccessible to patients that recently purchased coverage through the exchange, patient's are forced to change doctors or drive far distances to see specialists within the network.

Legislators nationwide are now scrambling to fix this apparent loophole by proposing new laws to force plans to expand their networks offered through the consumer exchange.

Physicians are also impacted by these narrow networks, as many are losing patients that they've treated for years. Arizona is seeing this already, and a number of local carriers have aggressively marketed these narrow networks as an affordable alternative for consumers shopping for cheaper options.

Have you had any experiences thus far with these networks? Have you had patients adversely impacted by these networks?

If so, we want to hear from you. Please share with us your experience with narrow networks through a short, 5 minute survey.

Change Like Never Before

Miriam Anand, MD

Miriam Anand, MD, President

So, here we are in February, one month into the Affordable Care Act's Grand Premiere.

If the last few months of 2013 are any indicator, it doesn't bode well for the future.

The ACA is surely the biggest change that our profession has faced in decades, but there have already been so many changes and delays to parts of the law that one almost has whiplash trying to keep up. The cautious optimism for 2014 that I expressed last month is becoming more cautious and less optimistic.
