PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Swimming Against the Tide of Physician Burnout
 
The courage it took to jump off the boat in front of Alcatraz was extinguished by the freezing water temperature. The sting made me hyperventilate a little as I sank below the surface. It was astonishingly quiet, under the Bay at dawn. There were 2,000 people starting the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon with me, but I felt entirely alone, and oddly calm.

 

The water was so cold I felt an electrical shock down my median nerves as I began swimming. The neurosurgeon in me was trying to figure out why this would happen; the middle-aged Jew in me wondered what kind of meshugena convinced me a triathlon was such a good idea in the first place. And the swimmer in me shortened his stroke and pulled hard against the water for some traction.
