President's Message
Pioneering the Path to Improved Healthcare Jobs
Daniel Lieberman, MD

Because the recent economic downturn drove the unemployment rate to levels unseen since the Great Depression in some parts of our country, the public policy debate today centers on three little words: jobs, jobs, jobs. What "location" is to real estate, jobs are to the 21st century. Pick up any magazine - including this one - and you will be confronted with facts about the evolving nature of the workplace, the changing needs of a world economy, and shifts in job satisfaction unlike anything since the dawn of the Industrial Age. The medical profession is not exempt. Indeed, physicians are at the center of our very own hurricane of job-related forces.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of physicians and surgeons is expected to grow by 24 percent from 2010 to 2020. This rate is faster than the average for all occupations - in part because of the continued expansion of health care-related industries. Simply put, we are going to need a lot more doctors.

February MCMS Board Meeting Highlight
Hot Topic: Treating Mental Illness
In response to media buzz on numerous mass shootings across the nation, mental illness was the "hot topic" of the month for our board members' discussion. Read President Lieberman's resulting editorial, The Other Side of Gun Violence: Treating the Mentally Ill Patient, where he states, "it's simple: doctors must control the doctor-patient relationship, not lawmakers and certainly not the gun lobby."

Much Ado About the New HIPAA Regulations
by Ken Briggs, associate at Milligan Lawless, P.C.

The government published new regulations impacting physician practices' compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 ("HIPAA") on January 25, 2013. Practices will need to update certain documentation, including internal policies, and educate employees about the changes in order to maintain compliance with HIPAA.

The Office for Civil Rights ("OCR"), the agency that enforces HIPAA, has been allocated tremendous resources to increase its investigation of practices' compliance with HIPAA. In addition, the OCR has been granted increased authority to assess monetary penalties for failing to comply with HIPAA. As of January 31, 2013, OCR had received nearly 78,000 complaints relating to HIPAA.  The publication of the new regulations presents an opportunity for practices to thoroughly review HIPAA compliance.

Coming up in the April Issue of Round-up Magazine
Let's talk about physician burnout

It's no secret that the "bureaucratization" of medicine has resulted in many physicians feeling a decline in the sense of fulfillment they derive from their work; in fact, studies have gone on to prove that physicians experience burnout at a rate that exceeds that of the general population. In a 2012 report from Archives of Internal Medicine, 46% of physicians - to us, an alarming amount - reported at least one symptom of burnout.

To investigate this hot topic, and fittingly on the heels of March's "jobs, jobs, jobs" issue, April's issue of Round-up will zero-in on physician burnout.

Should this doc have slammed her patient on Facebook?
An OB-GYN is in the middle of a social media maelstrom after complaining about a patient on her Facebook page. Dr. Amy Dunbar, 33, of St. John's Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo., posted on the social networking site in late January about a patient who continually showed up late to her scheduled appointments. When asked in the comments why she didn't cancel the procedure or transfer the woman to another doctor, Dunbar stated that the patient had previously endured a stillbirth. The post was publicly visible and not restricted to Dunbar's 470 friends.
