President's Page: Zombie Doctors of the Healthcare Apocalypse
| | |
These days in the doctor's lounge I can't stop thinking about
zombies.
No, I'm not worried that my colleagues have contracted a Mononegavirales virus and are lurching through the hospital toward the wards. Rather, it seems like many of my fellow physicians have lapsed into a state of social and political unconsciousness.
It is not hard to see how we got here. We are coming off two

decades of conflict with insurance companies over managed care. We never reached a good solution regarding the liability problem, and malpractice seems constantly to fester in the background. Just when it seemed like the doctor-patient relationship was as strained as it could get, the Federal Government decided to step into the ring and not in the physicians' corner. President Obama made multiple unfortunate comments, previously reported in Round-up, indicating physicians routinely perform unnecessary procedures on children, as well as amputations, for money. Multiple surveys have documented that a strong and increasing majority of physicians oppose Obamacare. So it is not altogether surprising, as Dr. Mills so eloquently pointed out in the November 2012 Round-up, that a large majority of physicians now say they would prefer to retire rather than practice. During my entire career I have never seen doctors this disengaged. It's come to the point that, frankly, I worry about our profession.

SGR Update
| | For now the crisis to physicians has been averted with the late Tuesday approval of the fiscal cliff package that prevents the expected 26.5% Medicare physician payment cut, and extends current Medicare payment rates for doctors through December 31, 2013. But we all know that isn't the end of the story - as President Obama indicated in a press conference, he's open to reforms in the Medicare program.
MCMS is keeping you InforMed!
Please keep an eye out for another special issue of InforMed Society, which will include an advisory update on SGR by MCMS CEO & Executive Director Sara Presler.
To ensure you receive the latest advisory, please remember to add mcms@mcmsonline.com to your address book, and double check your spam settings to allow our e-mails to filter through.

UA Medical Students Hold Seventh Charity Gala to Benefit Brain Tumor Research
| | |
Students from the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix will hold its seventh annual charity gala on Saturday, January 26, 2013.
The night of dinner, dancing and silent auction will be held at 7 pm in the Virginia G. Piper Auditorium on the College of Medicine - Phoenix campus, 600 E. Van Buren St., in downtown Phoenix.
Tickets are $75 per person or $50 for College of Medicine - Phoenix students, staff, faculty and administration. A table of eight can be purchased for $550.
The ball benefits Students Supporting Brain Tumor Research (SSBTR), was founded in 2002, when research pointed out that, other than leukemia, this particular disease was the number one cancer killer of teenagers. SSBTR is an organization predominantly run by students and dedicated to fighting brain tumors by providing money for research grants.
Gala organizers continue to look for silent auction item donations - anything from gift certificates, to signed sports memorabilia. The Phoenix community is encouraged to donate items; all donations are tax-deductible.
Last year's event drew more than 150 attendees and raised a record $18,500 to benefit brain tumor research.
