Giving Back: The 22nd Annual ACT Health Fair
|
|
The Arizona Coalition for Tomorrow (ACT) Health Fair was held on September 29. Working with businesses, government and educational leaders, and partnering with organizations like Maricopa County Medical Society (MCMS); ACT organizes this all-volunteer event to serve at-risk children that are eligible for metropolitan Phoenix Head Start programs, but lack appropriate medical clearances. Services include dental, eye, hearing and asthma screenings; lead testing, TB tests, physicals, blood tests, immunizations, vision screenings and nutrition information.
Since the ACT Health Fair's inception, MCMS has worked to enlist and organize its members to volunteer, and each year our physicians have answered the call to help by enthusiastically participating in this wonderful community event. Many MCMS volunteers return year after year with the goal of giving back to the communities they serve and emphasizing the importance of regular health screenings, immunizations and follow-up care.
The Medical Society would like to thank all of our members that graciously donated their smiles, skills, kindness and time to this remarkable cause. We sincerely appreciate your effort:

Could Expired Drugs Cut the US Health Bill?
| | With drug shortages and a bloated national health bill, what if expired medications were still effective? What if instead of throwing out the drugs, patients and pharmacists could keep them on the shelves for several more years?
Lee Cantrell, director of the California Poison Control System, San Diego Division, and a professor of clinical pharmacy at University of California, San Francisco and his colleagues went about testing the content of old boxes of medicine, which had expired 28 to 40 years earlier. Out of the 14 compounds they analyzed, 12 still fulfilled government requirements for potency, according to the team's report. The boxed drugs included the narcotic painkillers hydrocodone and codeine as well as the sedative pentobarbital and butalbital.

Are You Mentally Ready to Retire?
| | Successful retirements can hinge on whether physicians know what they want to do with all the time freed up from no longer practicing.
For many physicians, financial planning for retirement begins during the first years of practice. But what about preparing for the psychological transition to retirement - that inevitable time when the practice of medicine is no longer the primary focus of your time and energy?
