 LEGISLATIVE OUTREACH & PRIORITIES

Levy, Speaker of HOuse Mike Shenault
LR:  David Levy, Speaker of the House,
 Mike Chenault
In early February, former AMC Executive Director,  David Levy flew to Juneau and met with state legislators and their staff to discuss AMC priorities as well as transportation challenges and opportunities across the state.

Thanks to AMC President, Doug Bridges and new AMC member Sarah Lefebvre for assisting David during his last official visit as the AMC Executive Director.

The Alaska Legislature is a month away from the end of the session. They are finishing up the state operating budget and have begun work on the capital budget. Currently, Governor Walker's budget request for the state match program is still in the budget. We will keep you posted with legislative alerts if there are any changes in the budget.

Support for the State Match for Public Transportation - Once again, the AMC is asking for the legislature's support for the state match program. The program has generated $5 million in state funds over the last four years. The funding has been used to match federal, other state, local and private funds to buy equipment, hire drivers and expand routes to support Alaskans getting to work, school and medical appointments.  I have attached a copy of the FY15 state match distribution for your review.

Alaska Transportation Infrastructure Fund - According to the National Council of State Legislatures, Alaska is the only state in the union that does not have a dedicated transportation trust fund. That means that all of our gas taxes, DMV fees and other transportation revenue goes into the general fund. In the meantime, Alaska continues to lag in replacing much needed transportation infrastructure such as roads, bridges, ferries, airports and public transportation. The Alaska Mobility Coalition (AMC) is working with transportation advocates to create a statewide transportation fund for Alaska. We are pleased to be working with former State Representative Peggy Wilson on this project and are working to identify a legislator who will re-introduce her bill during the upcoming session. In the meantime, the AMC is looking for funding to put together a statewide awareness campaign, if you have any ideas or suggestions, please contact Doug Bridges (AMC President) or myself.  I have linked an overview of Representative Wilson's proposal for your review.

FAIRBANKS PARTNERSHIP PROJECT

Some exciting news on the Fairbanks Partnership Project, we were just approved for a VISTA Volunteer position to help support the project and transportation efforts in Fairbanks.  A VISTA Volunteer is supported by the AmeriCorps program and works with members of a specific project on community development efforts.  The VISTA Volunteer in Fairbanks will be housed at Access Alaska and will be responsible for helping to organize monthly meetings, maintain the project website, work to help support fund raising efforts and outreach to various foundations for support, fostering relationships and agreements between key organizations to help promote coordination, and to help support the efforts of a coordinated plan.  The full position description and information on how to apply is linked for your review.  If you know anyone who is interested in volunteering and work in the transportation field, please encourage them to apply.

Ads are continuing to run on the inside of the UAF Shuttles and MACS Transit buses.  Three additional ads are now running on the back of the MACS buses.  These ads are continuing to promote the Fairbanks Transportation website.  If you have suggestions for additional content or ways to improve the website please let us know through the comment section at the bottom of each page.

In addition to the new bus ads I was able to make a trip to Fairbanks to meet with members of the steering committee.  The meeting was highly productive with conversations covering the VISTA Volunteer position, increased publicity efforts for the website, the rewriting of the Fairbanks Coordinated Plan, and the next face-to-face meeting that will be held on March 24th at 1:30 PM in Fairbanks. If you are going to be in the Fairbanks area please feel free to join us.
