 LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES UPDATE

We are continuing to monitor the budgetary discussions taking place in Juneau.  Right now the Capital Budget is remaining unchanged so the $750,000 is secure.  We are very confident this money will remain in the budget when the bill is passed to the Governor.  When the bill has been transmitted, we will be sending a letter of support for the matching funds to the Governor.  If this money has helped you, we encourage you to write a letter as well.

Alaska Transportation Infrastructure Fund - According to the National Council of State Legislatures, Alaska is the only state in the union that does not have a dedicated transportation trust fund. That means that all of our gas taxes, DMV fees and other transportation revenue goes into the general fund. In the meantime, Alaska continues to lag in replacing much needed transportation infrastructure such as roads, bridges, ferries, airports and public transportation. The Alaska Mobility Coalition (AMC) is working with transportation advocates to create a statewide transportation fund for Alaska. We are pleased to be working with former State Representative Peggy Wilson on this project and are working to identify a legislator who will help carry this vital issue forward. In the meantime, the AMC is working with advocates from many communities to garner support from all across the state. We are continuing to hold monthly teleconferences and welcome anyone who would like to participate. For more information please reach out to me. I have linked an overview of Representative Wilson's proposal for your review.

FAIRBANKS TRANSPORTATION PROJECT

The Fairbanks Project is proud to announce a VISTA Volunteer has been hired.  There were several strong candidates for the position and we received almost 20 applications.  The interview process was handled telephonically and included candidates from the lower 48 and in the Fairbanks area.  We are very pleased with our selection and will be sure to include a short biography in the next newsletter.  The VISTA Volunteer will work with AMC staff and members of the community to help progress the writing of a coordinated plan and then work to implement some of the goals highlighted in the process.  This VISTA Volunteer ensures the project has a strong future as they have made a yearlong commitment.
