Hosting relatives at your home can bring all types of reactions to mind.  For some it is a time of panic, for others it is a time of joy.  In either case, the following tips can make the visit more enjoyable for all involved:

Use humour every chance you get - Humour goes a long way when it comes to diffusing awkward moments.  It will also get your point across without hurt feelings.  Making light of a situation is much more effective and affirming than getting into an argument.

Be yourself - Simply being who you are is much less exhausting than trying to be who you think they want you to be.  You can be yourself and still show hospitality.  Not a great cook?  What's wrong with takeout?  Does one of your visiting relatives happen to be a great cook?  Why not invite them to cook a meal or two?
