Happy Holidays
Each year as I decorate my house for the holidays I remember joyous times from years past when my now adult daughters were little.  Memories of baking cookies together, their first days of school, band practices, camping and hiking together, prom.   Raising children is no small task and I had plenty of help.

Many of the children at our programs are raised by a single parent and often don't have the support of friends and family, and all of the young women at our Assisting Young Mothers program are single moms.

As we celebrate the holidays and prepare for cold weather ahead, I hope you will consider making a donation to Alternative House so that we can continue to provide much-needed support to our vulnerable young people and families.

Happy holidays,

Judith Dittman
Executive Director
Hail to the Redskins
If you're not already a fan, you will be after this:

On December 15th, several players from the Redskins teamed up with Walmart and gave 50 of our children an unforgettable treat for the holidays. Each player took five kids shopping at Walmart, purchasing toys, sports equipment and clothing for our young people. Everyone had a great time and our kids were bursting with excitement! The kids were able to buy gifts for themselves and their loved ones. One of the children from our Safe Youth Project purchased flowers for all of our staff, and many of the children were purchasing gifts for their moms and siblings.

The Redskins heard about our young people and took time out of their undoubtedly busy schedules to make our kids feel important and loved during the holidays. No matter what team you root for, you have to love these guys! THIS is winning.

Josh's Story
Raised in suburban Northern Virginia, Josh had enjoyed a fairly comfortable childhood until his freshman year of high school when his father suddenly passed away and mother lost her job due to depression.

He and his mother eked by on their modest savings for months and sold most of their belongings. Winter arrived and Josh's mom paid for rent, but she could not afford their utility bill and Josh and his mother were evicted as a result.

For an entire year following their eviction, Josh and his mom slept on friends' couches, at seedy motels and hypothermia shelters. Amid the multiple upheavals, many of Josh's official documents had been lost, including his birth certificate and social security card.

Josh wanted a job to earn income but was unable to work because he was missing his documents and did not know how to replace them.

Then, Josh learned about our Springfield Family Resource Center from his teacher. At the Center, our staff assisted Josh with lengthy paperwork and phone calls until they were able to help Josh replace all of his lost documents. Next, our staff helped Josh create a resume and practice interviewing techniques.  Josh soon landed a part time job at a local deli where he works weekends. He says that he is grateful for the help he got at the Center because his job allows him to be more independent and helps support his family.

The best part? He has saved enough to get his mom a special gift for the holidays.
