Alternative House
June 2014
42 years of providing a better tomorrow for today's youth.

Summer is Here! When you take away the structure, supervision and obligations of the school year, add warm weather and late nights, kids are in greater danger of falling off the responsibility track. Through many of our programs, we try to provide a safe place for children and teens to come to continue their path for success.

Here at Alternative House you would think the holidays are upon us. The young people in our programs are excited. They find it hard to concentrate. There is anticipation in the air. What could it be? Why the end of the school year, of course!
This is an exciting time at Alternative House. We will be at numerous graduation celebrations for the young people in our programs. Seven of our Homeless Youth Initiative high school students will receive their diplomas and are off to higher education and employment. We are also celebrating at the Culmore Teen Center where seven young people are graduating from high school. Five of them are off to college, two of them with full scholarships. Perhaps the most excited about graduation of all, though, are the children making the big step to Middle School in our Safe Youth Projects.
After the graduation excitement settles down, we're planning a summer filled with educational field trips, cultural activities and fun things like trips to the pool. I hope you also have a safe and fun filled summer.

Culmore Teen Center's Outdoor Adventure
|
The Culmore Teen Center celebrated Memorial Day by being in the great outdoors! The original plan was to visit Great Falls, but due to the park being full, they found a nearby trail and discovered their own "little" Great Falls.
When school is out for the year, our Culmore Teen Center extends their hours to provide the teens a safe place to be and provides opportunities for field trips that some of these kids would not have the option to do without our staff, volunteers, and donors.

Employee Spotlight: Eric Russo, Residential Counselor
|
Eric Russo came to Alternative House almost a year ago to work in the position of Residential Counselor at our Emergency Teen Shelter on Gallows Road. He came looking for more than a 9-5 job, but to work in a place he had wished existed for some of his friends when he was a teenager. "This is an awesome place and I wish some of my friends would have had this growing up," said Eric. As a Residential Counselor, he provides individual counseling, assists with homework and helps the teens stay on task with daily chores and responsibilities. Our counselors also help keep the Emergency Shelter a well-maintained and welcoming place and ensure the young people staying with us feel safe. "I really enjoy working with teenagers in general and there is never a boring day."
When a child enters the shelter for the first time, Eric uses his experience to initiate a conversation with them about something they are interested in like music, television shows, movies or sports. This helps make the young person feel comfortable right away. "I try to keep up-to-date with things that are popular with teenagers so I can speak to the kids when they arrive and hope to find a common ground to open the conversation."
Before Alternative House, Eric was a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute with a major in English and in his spare time he enjoys painting miniatures.

Volunteer Spotlight: Nicole Calderwood
|
Her local church, Fairfax Community, introduced Nicole Calderwood to Alternative House, during the church's "Go Local" campaign to help their parishioners connect with charities on a local level. She initially began two years ago as a volunteer who helped make dinner at our Culmore Teen Center. Now, she has transitioned to a group of parishioners that make breakfast two Saturdays a month at our Emergency Teen Shelter. Nicole says she chose to work with Alternative House because, "It sounded like a great cause and so I got involved." She enjoys every minute when she is at Alternative House and when asked what she likes most? "Simply, I love to eat with the teens and speak to them about what is going on in their life and their interests. I know a lot of the kids have a lot of darkness, so I like to bring a little light." One of her favorite memories after a breakfast at the shelter was when a group of the volunteers and a group of the teens tried their hand at a game of kickball. "This is a great opportunity to love on some kids who really need some love," is Nicole's advice for a new volunteer. Nicole just recently finished her MBA at George Mason University and currently works as a financial analyst. She moved a lot as a child due to her father being in the military, but she spent her high school career locally at West Springfield High School. She also has just recently picked up road biking. |

Ambassadors are short-term volunteers who help invite ten people to our Open Door Information Sessions within a three-month time frame. These sessions are held every second Tuesday of the month at 10 am, 3 pm, and 6 pm, and provide a great opportunity to tour Alternative House's Emergency Shelter for Teenagers, learn about our programs, and hear about the successes of our young people.
Next two Open Door Information Session dates are:
July 8th
August 19th
