42 years of providing a better tomorrow for today's youth.

National Family Month provides an opportunity for families to share special time together, to develop or renew relationships, identify or rediscover needs and to remind everyone of the importance of family involvement in raising healthy, confident kids for America's future.

A Note from our Executive Director

Family means different things to different people.  My own concepts of what "family" means has changed over time.  I used to think of it like my own family - a mother, a father and children.  Now I can see many other kinds of families that are just as supporting and caring as my traditional family was and is. Many of the young people in our programs don't have the support of a traditional family.  Some of them have few people in their lives who care about them and cheer them on to succeed.

For these young people the teacher who takes an interest in them, or the faith community members who show up with dinner and take the time to stay and talk, become the family support system these young people lack.  The people who open their homes to our homeless high school students often become their "family".

At our Emergency Shelter for Teenagers, we see both "traditional" and "non-traditional" families that are in crisis.  We provide counseling and other support to help them safely stay together.  Our Community Based Programs work to help these families remain stable and avoid a crisis that may result in a young person becoming homeless.

We see a lot of different "families" at Alternative House and are committed to helping them remain strong and provide the supports young people need.

Meet Our Young People: Maria

Maria came to Alternative House's Transitional Living Program distraught, out of options and simply looking for a place to call "home". Maria found out about us from her brothers and sisters, who learned about Alternative House programs at their high school. Growing up, Maria and her siblings bounced between their mother, who struggled with mental illness, a father who had a new family, and an older sister who was attempting to make a life for herself. After graduating from high school, Maria went off to college, but ran into her own mental health troubles while at school. After attempting suicide during her freshman year, she left college and tried to move back to her father's.  Maria's stepmother did not want her to live with them and would not allow it. Without a stable place to call "home", Maria remembered Alternative House and reached out to us. We were able to coordinate housing with a host home through our Transitional Living Program. Maria gained a supportive, family-like place to live while she worked multiple jobs to save money. Maria ultimately achieved stable employment and saved enough money to live independently. Our counselors have also worked with Maria to help her with things like budgets, time management and self-confidence.  Maria says she's now confident that her success will continue when she graduates from our Transitional Living Program later this year.

Employee Spotlight: Susan Blalock, Development Associate

Susan Blalock, Alternative House's Development Associate, has been a committed member to our organization since December 2008, and her hard work, dedication, and passion makes her our Employee Spotlight for May. She began at our organization as the Office Manager/Volunteer Coordinator, but after the birth of her daughter she changed paths and filled a very important role on our Development team.

Susan is originally from North Carolina, she attended Queens University of Charlotte, and before Alternative House was a high school science teacher. After moving to Northern Virginia, she "would drive on Gallows Road and would notice our Emergency Teen Shelter and wanted to find out more information about it." Later, she saw a position open at our organization and the rest fell into place.

The effort Susan brings to her position does not go unnoticed. "I appreciate the fact that I can support the people working with the kids. I do my job, so they can do their job. It is really the work that Alternative House does that keeps me here."

When commenting on the growth of Alternative House as an organization, "I think it is wonderful. Ever since I started at Alternative House, I would hear the stories of the kids who would come in and I would be so glad that they found us. The growth of Alternative House means more kids can continue to find us."

When not working at Alternative House, she enjoys spending time with her husband and her 3-year-old daughter. Susan also likes to garden and read.

Volunteer Spotlight: Debra Tucker
Debra Tucker is a volunteer at our Emergency Teen Shelter and we wanted to recognize her for her service and the expertise she brings to our organization. She is a retired school psychologist with Fairfax County schools, she received her undergraduate degree from Randolph-Macon College, she holds two graduate degrees from the University of Georgia, and received her doctorate from the
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Debra came to Alternative House after years of referring students to us as a school psychologist. "I had a private practice and wanted to start to give back once I retired. I realized I wanted to volunteer at a place I used to refer kids to."

At the Teen Shelter, like a lot of volunteers, she prepares meals, cleans, changes beds and helps to prepare rooms during the transition of clients leaving and our new arrivals. Debra also makes phone calls to clients who have left and to their families to see if they need anything to help continue their journey towards success. Her philosophy as a volunteer is, "I know how hard the counselors at Alternative House work, and anything I can do to make their life easier is what I like to do." Debra also enjoys working with the young counselors and of course the youth that Alternative House helps. "Without a doubt, the people we serve and those who work at the organization are the best thing about Alternative House."

In the future, Debra will expand her role as volunteer by speaking to the Student Services Staff at the Fairfax County schools to educate them about our organization. Further, while utilizing her expertise, she will be leading workshops for our Assisting Young Mothers (AYM) program.

Debra enjoys reading and is a yoga enthusiast as well as an avid gardener, and she adores her rescue cockapoo, Izzy. She and her husband love to travel, especially internationally. This year she will be headed to Napa Valley and Sonoma to celebrate her daughter's completion of her master's she received from Vanderbilt University.
