Thank you. I know I say the words often but I truly am thankful for all that you and all of our supporters do for the young people who need help in our community. We just hosted the most successful Beacon of Hope Breakfast we've ever had. We raised more than $200,000 to help young people who are trying to break out of cycles of poverty and abuse and become successful independent members of our community. It won't happen tomorrow but we're trying to expand the emergency shelter services available to homeless, abused and runaway young people 13 to 17 years old. We're also trying to make sure that every homeless high school student has safe shelter and the support they need to graduate and that our waiting list of 30 homeless young mothers and their children find a safe haven. We will also help disadvantaged young people who are working hard to succeed in school with the support they need. It's a big job but we have a community committed to making it happen - so, once again, thank you! - Judith Dittman

"Tommy" is a highly intelligent and creative sixth-grade student that has been attending Culmore Safe Youth Project since the fourth grade. He is always willing to provide assistance with snack and room set-up and enjoys lively, light hearted, hilarious conversations. However, it took him a few years to get to this point.
Tommy's life was shattered when his mother left him and his father to start another family. She meant the world to him, so this perceived act of abandonment really hurt. When he first started coming to the program, he had a really hard time getting along with others. Playing video games and eating was his way of comforting himself, and he seldom participated in outdoor sports. Schoolwork was at the bottom of his priority list.
One late afternoon, the Program Coordinator, taking note of Tommy's extreme interest in video games, drew a comparison between gaming and life goals and used gaming jargon to illustrate the importance of seeing a goal and working toward it little by little to achieve it. This resonated deeply with Tommy. Since this conversation, Tommy has been arriving at the program saying things like "Today I worked a little harder because I can see that these homework assignments are the key to getting me to the 'boss' (gaming word for a very challenging opponent) which is the upcoming test. I did well on all my homework, so I think I have what it takes to earn an A on the test."

Like all young people, it will take ongoing support and encouragement to help Tommy reach his full potential. However, he is happier and more confident, and his grades reflect his change in attitude.

Staff Spotlight - Soraya Borja |
After working to provide health care services to children in Equador from 1996 to 1998, Soraya Borja came to the United States and joined Alternative House in 2005. She now serves as the Program Coordinator for our Culmore Teen Center, an after-school program that provides guidance and structure to at-risk 7 th through 12th graders.
Many of the children and young people in Alternative House's programs are recent immigrants. "I know how it is to feel new and lost," says Soraya, recalling her own transition to the United States. "I wanted to help these children and families access resources they may not otherwise have known about."
Soraya enjoys spending time with family and taking her three children to the park. Selfless, intelligent and always pleasant, Soraya Borja is an inspiration to our young people and an asset to Alternative House and the Culmore community.

Volunteer Spotlight - Mary Allen Beckley |
Mary Alan Beckley is a warm, talented, and dedicated volunteer at our Annandale Safe Youth Project for at-risk children in 4 th through 6th grades. With a candid smile and indestructible can-do attitude, she is happy to help and enthusiastic to pitch in wh erever she can. "I always look forward to homework time after school because I enjoy helping children improve their math and reading skills."
Before her retirement gave her the time to volunteer at Alternative House's Annandale Safe Youth Project, Mary Alan worked at the Department of Veterans Affairs assisting with career counseling and benefits issues.
A woman who wears many hats, Mary Alan has taken Spanish, yoga, drywall repair and electrical wiring classes. When she is not busy volunteering and expanding her horizons, Mary Alan loves spending time with family in Pennsylvania and Washington state. We are thrilled to have her on board!
