Ten Years of Breaking cycles of Poverty and Abuse!

10 years ago we opened Assisting Young Mothers and immediately had four homeless young women and their children enter the program. Now we can provide safe shelter and support for nine young women and their children and this month we'll be adding two new apartments to our housing options.

That will mean the program has almost tripled in size but the program goal remains the same; help homeless young mothers gain the skills they to live successful, independent lives and be nurturing parents to their children. There is no greater predictor of life-long poverty than to be a single teenage mother and the daughters of teenage mothers are more likely to become teenage mothers themselves.

Our Assisting Young Mothers helps young women break that cycle. I'm incredibly proud that we've helped 78 young women achieve that goal. Judith

Terrific two's

Happy Birthday James!!!  Assisting Young Mother's son is shown here celebrating his birthday.  He just loved the toy truck he received, shown in the background.

Transitional Housing Program's Launching Pad to

Self-Sufficiency

Mark, 18 years old, grew up in various foster care homes over the years and did not have have a stable family to support his moving into adulthood. As a young teenager, Mark had been involved with the juvenile court system  and ultimately dropped out of school in the tenth grade.

After floating from friend's couch to friend's couch, Mark found himself in an adult homeless shelter, without a job, and without a next move. He came across our Homeless Youth Initiative(HYI) program online and applied.

Katie, one of Alterantive House's Case Managers, talked to Mark about his goals for the future and helped him settle in our new Transitional Living Program for homeless young people between the ages of 18 and 22.  With stable housing and support from Katie, Mark is now working two part-time jobs and is also working on attaining his GED.

Mark is highly motivated to learn all he can from Katie to become self-sufficient and launch into adulthood.

Lynne and her husband, Nick, have 2 boys, a sophomore in college and a high school senior. She loves to exercise outside and is an avid book reader. She enjoys watching basketball and baseball. She considers herself a closet bird/wildlife watcher and photographer.
