Sorry if we missed anyone

This past month saw our office stacked high with skateboards, dolls, clothing, bikes, and food. The outpouring from the faith community, businesses, civic organizations and countless individuals was overwhelming. Just about every item on every child's wish list was delivered and our counselors made certain that it got to the child for whom it was meant.

The seven young people who spent the holidays at our Emergency Shelter and all of the moms and children at AYM also had lots of amazing gifts. In addition, we had warm coats donated and food enough to make memorable holiday meals with staple items to spare so families can keep food on the table into January. In these tough economic times we are seeing many families who cannot provide enough warm clothing and nutritious meals for their children, let alone holiday presents. Your generosity made what might have been a bleak season for many a bountiful one. I hope you also had a wonderful holiday season and a great New Year. Thank you!

Dear Donors,

I just wanted to say thank you and how much I appreciate the gifts that were donated to myself and my son for Christmas.  He really felt good knowing that he would still be getting something even though I'm not exactly in the position to provide those things right now.

He loved the toys and still won't put any of them down, I know he appreciates them too.  Thank you again so much for having the heart to do things like this for people in my position.  It really does make a difference.
 God Bless,

New Hope for Teen
In December Lori, a 17 year old girl came to the shelter after living in Virginia with her older sister for several months. Prior to living with her sister, Lori had been in foster care in California. Lori and her siblings had been removed from their mother's custody because she couldn't care for them.

When Lori came to Virginia to live with her sister, it didn't go as planned. Her sister couldn't give Lori the structure she needed. Fairfax County Child Protective Services in conjunction with California Child Protective Services located a safe place for Lori to live at Alternative House while they arranged to transport her back to California. Due to the holidays and funding issues, arranging transportation was difficult.

The more time that passed, the more anxious Lori became. Alternative House staff reassured Lori and helped her get safely back to California. Lori said she was grateful to have Alternative House staff accompanied her to the airport, help her get her ticket, get checked in and then board her flight. Lori's flight went smoothly and was met at the Los Angeles airport by her social worker and was transitioned into safe living arrangement.
