Support Their Dreams In this issue of the newsletter you will learn about the dreams of three young people...Tina, Eddie and Juan. Your support has helped make their dreams and the dreams of other young people in our programs come true. If you have not already done so, please consider including Alternative House in your year-end financial and gift planning. We will put your donation to good use helping children, youth and young adults. Alternative House has the highest rating from Charity Navigator; an independent, non-profit organization that evaluates American charities. We are featured this year in the Catalogue for Philanthropy, another non-profit that screens organizations for effective use of community support. You can make a one-time or reoccurring donation securely on line here. Or simply mail a check to Alternative House at: P.O. Box 694, Dunn Loring, VA 22027. You can rest assured that your donation will be gratefully accepted and put to use keeping young people safe and making their dreams of a brighter future come true. I hope you and your loved ones have a happy holiday! Judith Dittman, Executive Director |

New Hope for Young Mother and Son |
Tina and her son, Eddie, found themselves homeless shortly after his birth three years ago. Living with different family members and friends in various locations, Tina actively sought assistance with finding a stable home for her and Eddie. After being turned away from several other programs because she had a child, Tina and Eddie entered our Assisted Young Mothers (AYM) program last year in the hopes that it would help her as she put it to become "a successful, independent woman."
During her time at AYM, Tina obtained full-time employment with a childcare agency. She studied for and passed her GED, which led to a raise in pay at her job. Tina also purchased her own car, which made commuting to work more manageable and taking her son to visit his grandmother possible.
Tina is now enrolled in college studying Contract Management; her goal is to open a program for young women and franchise her own childcare business. Go Tina!!

Giant Food Truck Drivers Donate 150 Coats and More
Thank you to the Giant Food Truck Drivers who came together to help the families connected with Alternative House's Culmore Teen Center and Culmore Safe Youth Project. 150 coats and many bags of toiletries were collected by the drivers. The box truck was packed full!
We did not know what to expect with distributing such a large donation. Alternative House Community Based Programs staff Nandred Navarro, Mirtha Rivera, and Soraya Borja did an outstanding job in organizing the enormous number of people who were grateful for this early Christmas present. Special thanks to Alternative House board member Lisa Moffet, along with volunteers Anne Bertola and Rick Their who helped with the distribution. Again a "GIANT" Thank You to the Giant Food Truck Drivers for their help!! |
Proud College Bound Teen
| Juan proudly shows his acceptance letter. Soraya Borja, Teen Center Coordinator in background. |
Juan came running into the Teen Center franticly waving a letter interrupting a meeting between Teen Center coordinators Soraya Borja and Nathan Powell. He could not wait to tell the good news!
Juan had just been accepted to George Mason University. He is the first member of his family to attend college and the first people he wanted to tell were the staff at the Teen Center who helped him with tutoring and college applications.
Juan and his younger sister Vanessa came to the Culmore Teen Center two years ago to find a safe place to study and socialize. He has been an outgoing and positive influence among the other teens. At JEB Stuart High School Juan tutors fellow students in Spanish on Wednesdays and Thursdays. We are delighted to celebrate with Juan his dream of attending college. Juan is now busy with our staff researching grants and loans to finance his eduction.
Please consider volunteering at our Culmore Teen Center in Baileys Cross Roads to help other students like Juan fulfill their dreams of going to college.
