From the President
Thomas Skalko, PhD, LRT/CTRS, FDRT

As CAAHEP's incoming President for 2014-15, I want to begin this edition of the Communiqu with a heartfelt expression of appreciation to all the representatives of the Committees on Accreditation that participated in this July/August's Summer CoA workshop. I think all found useful information and new insights into the nuts and bolts of the CoA roles and activities and upcoming challenges.

A special thank you to Elise Scanlon for an outstanding presentation, "Transparency and Public Disclosure - New Requirements and New Policies and Trends for the Future."  Elise focused on several key issues that are confronting the world of accreditation and the accrediting bodies. There are changes in the wind and it is incumbent upon all of us to be aware of the issues and new proposed requirements in program accreditation.

Board Actions to Note:

Prior to the CAAHEP Workshop, the Board of Directors met to attend to CAAHEP business.  The meeting resulted in several important outcomes that are noteworthy.

Board Approval to Formalize the Recommendations Review Committee:

The CAAHEP Board formally approved the creation of the Recommendations Review Committee (RRC). The purpose of the RRC is to provide an in-depth review of accreditation action recommendations to the CAAHEP Board of Directors. Under the leadership of Kalyani Naik, the RRC has proven to be a valuable addition to the review process of CAAHEP.

It is important to note that the Board's action to evolve the RRC into a standing committee of CAAHEP will require By-Laws changes and ratification by the Commissioner body.  Please be watching for upcoming recommendations to be presented to all CAAHEP Commissioners.

Strategic Planning:

A second outcome was the commitment by the CAAHEP Board to engage in a formal strategic planning process to be completed by July 2015. It has been several years since the last CAAHEP strategic planning effort and it is time to reenter in the process.  With the changing environment of accreditation, it is essential that our accrediting agency (CAAHEP) strategically plan to continue to operate as the "Gold standard" for accreditation of allied health programs.

We will be communicating with all of our stakeholders for input into the process.  When the request to offer input comes across your desk, please take a few moments to offer your input. Strategic planning success is also contingent upon the input from all our stakeholders. Please keep an eye out for requests for your input.

A Request for Proposals (RFP) will be coming out soon so watch for information and help us with the process so that CAAHEP remains that "Gold Standard" in programmatic accreditation.

Board Changes:

Last by no means least, I want to welcome the new CAAHEP Board Members: Kate Feinstein, Betsy Slagle, Cheryl Harris, Doug York, and Deborah Agustin.  If you know them, please join me in congratulating them.

Please do not hesitate to communicate with us as we work to support the efforts of all our Committees on Accreditation, Sponsors, and Academic Institutions in the goal of protecting the public through sound accreditation outcomes and processes.

Thom Skalko, President

CAAHEP YouTube Channel View our videos on YouTube

There is a new YouTube Channel that is all about CAAHEP accreditation. The recently updated PBS Spotlight on Accreditation is now showing, along with the video from the former Recent Graduate Commissioner, Katie (Bowe) Lukovich, on the importance of CAAHEP accreditation.

Be sure also to check out the playlist on the CAAHEP Channel, which includes videos from Council for Higher Education Accreditation and Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors.

Your Accreditation Mentor for Program Directors

The Your Accreditation Mentor (YAM) is designed for program directors beginning the CAAHEP accreditation process. The website is a great place to start to get to know the terminology used with CAAHEP accreditation, what to expect throughout the process - from submitting the self-study through the site visit, the different CAAHEP accreditation statuses, contacts to the committees on accreditation, frequently asked questions, and more!

The site is a combination of narrative pages, examples, and videos from program directors, deans, former CAAHEP Board members, and committee on accreditation staff. CAAHEP Committees on Accreditation highly recommend the YAM for new program directors and deans or for an accreditation refresher.

Accreditation Actions

Each profession in the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) system has a Committee on Accreditation (CoA) that consists of experts in the profession that are responsible for reviewing programs and making appropriate recommendations for accreditation to CAAHEP. CAAHEP reviews recommendations received from its CoAs in each profession, assures due process was followed, and takes final action on an accreditation status.
