From the President
Cameron Harris, RPSG

A year ago, I relished an opportunity to visit the locale of a childhood hero, the Swamp Fox (Francis Marion), in Charleston, South Carolina. This year CAAHEP has chosen another venue of my childhood fantasies in San Antonio, Texas. I plan to visit the Alamo, which has been embedded in my memory through portrayals of Davey Crockett by the likes of Walt Disney and John Wayne. On a more practical level, I am looking forward to a tour of the Medical Education &Training Campus (METC) at Fort Sam Houston. CAAHEP's 20th annual meeting will be an opportunity to celebrate, to learn, and to take action.

We will celebrate with early leaders of CAAHEP. Jack Trufant will review how and why our organization was created followed by comments on the history and progress of CAAHEP by our first president, Bill Teutsch and two of his successors, Sondra Flemming and LaCheeta McPherson.

Meeting attendees will have an opportunity to learn. Our keynote address will be delivered by Rear Admiral William Roberts, Commandant of the METC. His comments will supplement the experience of touring the campus. We will hear from Elise Scanlon and Ilisa Halpern Paul about legislative and regulatory issues. A popular section of our meetings has been the spotlight series which this year will shine on the professionals in Emergency Medical Services, Neurodiagnostic Technology and Intraoperative Neurophysiologic Monitoring.  We will also hear about two of our sponsor organizations, the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Council on Exercise.

There is also work to be done. Commissioners will elect three Board members. A slate of candidates has been identified by the Nominations and Election Committee, but commissioners in the appropriate categories may be nominated at the meeting. Please refer to the 2014 Annual Meeting Material Book available on the CAAHEP web site for information about this opportunity. Action will also be taken on acceptance of two new Committees on Accreditation into the CAAHEP community. Clinical Research professionals were previously voted in as an eligible profession and are this year petitioning the Commission for approval of the Committee on Accreditation of Academic Programs in Clinical Research (CAAPCR) with the Consortium of Academic Programs in Clinical Research as their sponsor. The American College of Medical Scribe Specialists is also seeking a vote of eligibility for their profession, along with approval of the Committee on Accreditation for Medical Scribe Education and the sponsoring membership of the American College of Medical Scribe Specialists.

In response to the changing environment for accreditors, the CAAHEP has charged a task group with "Reimagining CAAHEP." While there is no assumption that CAAHEP needs an overhaul, the Board would like to learn of ideas about how the organization can posture itself for a changing accreditation environment while meeting the needs and expectations of its stakeholders. A special session was held at the CoA Leadership conference in January to gather thoughts and identify from CoA leaders. pair of similar sessions are planned with Commissioners during the annual meeting. Please plan on attending and contributing.

Hope to see you in San Antonio.

CAAHEP Sponsors Spotlight

In this issue, the Sponsor Spotlight is on a collaborative effort of sponsoring organizations. CAAHEP applauds the efforts of the American Society of CytopathologyAmerican Society for Clinical PathologyAmerican Society for Cytotechnology, and College of American Pathologists for working together with the Cytotechnology Program Review Committee in the development of the new Cytology Education Learning Lab (CELL) website. The C.E.L.L. website has been developed to assist cytotechnology programs more easily implement the new entry-level competencies (ELCs), which were recently approved.

The new website addresses each entry-level competency and provides resources for each topic (i.e., PowerPoint presentations, images, webinars, etc.). The Sponsoring Organizations worked with the CPRC with input from cytopathologists and cytotechnologists to gather and review resource material to share with CAAHEP-accredited programs, as well as potential new Cytotechnology programs. The site also encourages program directors to submit resources they have developed in an effort to expand the resources available.

As indicated on the C.E.L.L. website, "This site is intended to be a "one-stop" secure mechanism for locating files and other resources to teach these new ELCs." It's a terrific example of Sponsoring Organizations working together to assist programs in meeting the gold standards of education for entry level cytology professionals.

A webinar is being conducted by the Cytotechnology Program Review Committee on May 6, 2014, for anyone interested in learning more about the site. The webinar will cover the C.E.L.L. site's purpose, how to navigate the site, as well as a review of how to contribute resources. For additional information on the webinar, please email Deborah MacIntyre Sheldon, Cytology Education Coordinator, American Society of Cytopathology and CPRC Coordinator or call (302) 543-6583.
