New "IRS" Scam Targeting Immigrants
A news scam has popped up around the Wisconsin area targeting immigrants. This scam involves a caller purporting to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and saying that the individual did not do their taxes correctly and as a result owes money to the government.
The caller becomes extremely pushy and demands payment immediately by threatening to have the person arrested by the local sheriff.
It is unclear how they callers are getting names and phone numbers, but it is clear that they are targeting elderly and immigrant populations.
Here at Grzeca Law Group, we have heard from some of our clients who have received these calls. They have reported that in addition to demanding payment, the caller may also try to ask for personal information. The caller may say they are trying to "verify" information, but in reality they are simply committing identity theft.
For everyone, but especially those not familiar with the IRS, please remember that the IRS will never solicit information over the phone, and would never demand payment without first sending written notification.
In addition, the IRS would never request personal information in a letter such as your birthday or social security number (they already have it if they're actually asking for money).
If you or someone you know has any concerns about being the victim of a scam as an immigrant and need more information about potential help, please contact Grzeca Law Group at (414) 342-3000 or visit our website at www.grzecalaw.com.
