Hokule'a Makes a Quick Stop in Annapolis
The Hokule'a, Hawaii's voyaging canoe, made a very brief stop in Annapolis last Thursday and Friday on her way south, completing her circumnavigation. She docked at the Annapolis Maritime Museum.
The photo above shows the very mixing of maritime traditions that we wanted to see. It was Dave Gelentner, captain of the Skipjack Stanley Norman, who pulled the main tow line to bring the Hokulea into her slip.
Once the canoe was secured, the crew broke into an ancient chant of greeting. Then they offered a tour of the canoe to anyone who wanted to board.
A highlight of the arrival was the participation of Navy Football Coach Ken Niumatalolo, one of Hawaii's most famous sons. He and his family were honored by Captain Nainoa Thompson and the crew, and Coach Ken received a special gift honoring him as a leader and inspiration to young Hawaiians.

This one-of-a-kind vessel carries with her eons of knowledge about ancient Polynesian navigation using only the wind, the waves, and the stars.
Annapolis Green is proud to have made her stop here possible, with the help of many people.

Moving Toward Greening Navy Football
Anyone up for a first-ever Navy Tailgate Recycling Challenge on November 12 when Navy plays Tulsa?
It's no secret Annapolis Green wants to help the Navy Marine-Corps Stadium Go Greener. This year we're starting slowly by influencing change on the outside with a few willing tailgate parties!
We're looking for THREE groups with 50+ tailgaters to be the examples and do the right thing by recycling while having fun. Annapolis Green (and we hope, a sponsor) will provide recycling bins, bags, banners, messaging, pick up and disposal.
And we're looking for sponsors who might like to be a part of the beginning of this effort.
Yes, we have a plan and will make good examples out of our groups and our sponsors!
As an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, this is our way of highlighting America Recycles Day, on November 15. We'll take the first three tailgate groups to respond to [email protected].
Recycling Continues at the Boat Shows. We Started Something.
Three years ago Annapolis Green began its quest for cleaner, greener events and festivals by bringing full-scale recycling to the Annapolis Boat Shows. We called the program "Red, Right, Recycle for Clean Water & a Healthy Bay." This was the beginning of our Responsible Events & Festivals Program (the Green REF) that has expanded and grown as one of several projects designed to help us all be better stewards while At Play around the Bay.
Thanks to the Boat Shows for continuing to offer recycling over the past two weekends, and to all exhibitors and attendees for being good stewards as they visit our terrific city.
