A Terrific and Huge Green Drinks on
1906 Towne Centre Boulevard
(Annapolis Towne Centre in Parole)
Theme
Celebrating the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National
Historic Trail and the Centennial of the National Park Service
Event Sponsor
We brought our summertime "fun side of eco-awareness... making serious connections" to the newly opened Cooper's Hawk Winery & Restaurant to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service by focusing on the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. We were in the second floor bar and spilled out onto the roomy open-air terrace -- at least until the torrential rain came through... but then a double rainbow appeared a few minutes later! What a great omen... What a great omen (double rainbow).
Was it the theme of the centennial of the National Parks Service and the Capt. John Smith Water Trail, or was it curiosity about the new Cooper's Hawk Restaurant and Winery, or was it Green Drinkers looking forward to getting together and getting to know one another? We don't know, but Green Drinks last Tuesday was one of the biggest and most successful in the 10 years we have been organizing these events.
Thank you to everyone who made a donation at the door. The funds help us bring you fun and informative evenings such as this and further our promotion of sustainability in the Greater Annapolis area.
Green Drinkers entered at the ground level tasting room of Cooper's Hawk Winery & Restaurant, and were greeted with a server offering a complimentary tasting glass of various varieties of wine. We all felt an immediate buzz from the beautiful tasting room and gift shop (that even includes chocolate!) and then went upstairs to experience the wine and food concept of this new addition to the scene in our town.
About Our Event Sponsor
Since its founding, our Green Drinks sponsor, the Chesapeake Conservancy, headquartered in Annapolis, has embraced the National Park Service's Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail as an inspiration and framework for its work in the region, ensuring a healthier Chesapeake Bay watershed where fish and wildlife thrive, and everyone enjoys healthy waters and abundant forests, wetlands, shorelines, and open spaces. With the human population in the Chesapeake watershed approaching 18 million and growing and with tens of thousands of acres of open space vanishing each year, the Conservancy works to connect people with its wildlife and history; conserve landscapes and rivers; and restore the region's natural resources.
The National Park Service is the lead federal agency in administering the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail, and the Chesapeake Conservancy is its principal partner for trail development. The National Park Service is also a federal partner in the watershed-wide Chesapeake Bay Program. In all these areas, the National Park Service connects people with the special places and stories of the Chesapeake, helps preserve those special places and stories, and fosters stewardship of the Chesapeake.
About the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail
The Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail commemorates Captain Smith's exploration of the Bay in 1607 through 1609, and is the nation's first all-water National Historic trail. It provides a significant conservation, recreation and education resource that stretches over 3,800 miles and traverses most of the Chesapeake's great rivers. In addition to providing needed recreational access to the Chesapeake and its rivers, the trail provides a framework for our work of large landscape conservation, vital to celebrate, protect and restore the Bay. Just as the Appalachian National Scenic Trail provided a framework for large landscape conservation since 1920, so can the John Smith Chesapeake Trail. And it's right in our backyard! Read more and take a virtual tour.
At Green Drinks, Joel Dunn, Executive Director of the Chesapeake Conservancy spoke about the organization's mission -- to connect people with the outdoors in our area -- and he told a story about how Green Drinks events have impacted his agency. His administrative assistant, who had been working in an unrelated field, applied for the job at the Conservancy only after she had attended a number of Green Drinks to meet people and learn more about the environmental community. So, Green Drinks connections work!
Joel and Sarah Elder, Conservancy Director of Operations, both told us about the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail and how to access and enjoy it. And Sarah presented an eco-quiz. Those who called out the right answer to each question received a small replica of the Capt. John Smith Shallop. Take the quiz -- it's on our website.
About the Centennial of the National Park Service Filmmaker Ken Burns called the National Parks "America's Best Idea" and used that phrase as the subtitle of his six-part PBS series. And it is. The National Park Service was created by an act signed by President Woodrow Wilson on August 25, 1916. Read more about the Centennial. Now there are 411 areas covering more than 84 million acres in every state, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Read more on our website. At Green Drinks, Cindy Chance, Cultural Anthropologist at the National Park Service, discussed the centennial of the service and both she and Sarah of the Chesapeake Conservancy had an extensive display of information.
We introduced you to Cooper's Hawk Winery and Restaurant, one of the newest dining experiences in the area, and a company that believes in sustainability. The company has 23 winery/restaurants in eight states and the Annapolis location is the first in Maryland. Cooper's Hawk's concept is great food paired with wines they produce themselves. The restaurant's tasting room offers 48 different varietals. All of Cooper's Hawk's wine is made at its winery in Chicago, with grapes sourced from California, Oregon and Washington.
We owe a big thank you to General Manager Scott Anderson for the hospitality extended by him and his staff and the incredibly generous appetizer buffet that just kept coming and coming! Scott also provided all Green Drinkers with a coupon for a free wine tasting for two to be used at a later date. We're sure those coupons have already been used! Read more about Cooper's Hawk on our website.
