As a Volunteer or a Sponsor
The festival season is kicking off soon as is our third year of bringing the environmental message to festival organizers, volunteers and participants all over our region.

Our area is privileged to host so many terrific events and festivals each year. With that comes much waste and a large footprint left behind. Working together, we can make a difference to turn this around.

Annapolis Green works closely with the local business community in a unique way through our Responsible Events and Festivals program also known as the "Green REF... Make the Right Call." Through REF, Annapolis Green helps the organizers of special events Go Green with best practices such as composting and recycling and a supporting marketing campaign by engaging local businesses as Green sponsors. From sporting events such as races and regattas to foot races and more, Annapolis Green matches companies with events that match their interests and helps them meet their sustainability goals. It's great exposure for local businesses and demonstrates a business's good corporate citizenship.
Please join Annapolis Green and our Responsible Events & Festivals... Make the Right Call" program to help instill good stewardship while "at play." That means encouraging recycling, compost, reduced water use, and a host of other good practices.

There are several ways YOU can participate:

  • Sign up and commit YOUR event to be an Annapolis Green Responsible Event or Festival
  • Be a Green REF Sponsor to make these efforts possible
  • BE a volunteer at a Green REF event
annapolis green eco-stations Over the past few years, you've most likely seen our Eco-Stations and messaging out and about at special events in the Annapolis area. The Eco-Stations are branded with the logos of our sponsoring companies.

We commend the over 20 events (ranging from sailing & boating, running, and golfing to lifestyle fun) that partnered with us last year to be more responsible in their efforts to reduce waste and educate attendees, volunteers, participants and vendors to adopt good Green practices. And in the process, we've connected the brand of many local businesses with these good practices and events, and we received the Green Business of the Year Award from the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce.

keep annapolis beautiful We are carrying out this initiative under the "Keep Annapolis Beautiful" banner we are as affiliate of the venerable Keep America Beautiful organization.

Here's a sampling of some of our 2015 REF accomplishments:
  • We formed strong partnerships with event organizers, host sites, and sponsors. Here are just a few examples:
    • Annapolis Running Classic & Oyster Classic at the Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium; Sponsors: Solar City, Fleet Feet Sports & & Mid-Atlantic GEM
    • Optimist Dinghy Association Atlantic Coast Championship at Annapolis Yacht Club; Sponsor Weems & Plath
    • The Brick Companies' Classic golf tournament at Queenstown Harbor; Sponsor: Solar City
    • 11th Annual Boatyard Beach Bash at the Annapolis Maritime Museum; Sponsors: Mercedes Benz of Annapolis and The Boathouse Waterfront Grille
    • 2nd Annual Blazers. Bourbon. Cigars. at the Historic William Paca House & Gardens; Sponsor: The Golf Club at South River
  • We strengthened our relationship with our terrific REF partners: Veteran Compost, Homestead Gardens, and Weems & Plath (our inaugural sponsor for "Red, Right, Recycle for Clean Water & a Healthy Bay" -- our REF program for waterside events)
REF plans for this year:
  • We are seeking a sponsor who would like to sponsor multiple events, by type -- that is, sports (foot races, regattas, etc.), fundraisers for certain causes (health, children's charities, etc.), or festivals (cuisine, music, etc.). The point is for businesses to sponsor Greening for events that resonate with their passions and sustainability goals. t
  • Establishing a fulfilling Volunteer Network, for adults  and for students who need to log community service hours
  • An online toolkit to make volunteer scheduling easier and that would provide FAQs for companies considering sponsorship
  • Greater concentration on composting and wise water use in all events, given our commitment to Clean Water and a Healthy Bay
Get your company name associated with clean water and an eco-friendly community by being a REF sponsor.
We'll match your company's sustainability goals with an upcoming regatta, running race, festival or other special event for mutual benefit.
volunteer opportunity
We need volunteers to help folks attending these events do the right thing -- recycle and compost. You'll feel good knowing that you're doing good for our planet and having fun too!
