"Start with a Stave"

Wine barrel staves (the boards that coopers bend into barrels) are wonderful examples of heritage craftsmanship. This beautiful reuse of wine barrels gives YOU the chance to help the Annapolis Green House get a great start.

Climate Negotiators Reach Agreement

The President spoke from the White House yesterday to lay out the importance of this agreement. Check out his remarks here.

So why is this such a big deal? The Paris Agreement establishes a long-term, durable framework to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.

In January we will recap this historic agreement, what it means to the planet and what it means to you on our radio program, Living Green in Annapolis on WNAV.
Limited Edition Oyster Knife

Our friends at the Oyster Recovery Partnership have a great holiday gift idea: a limited edition oyster knife.

ORP has collaborated with the Pride of Baltimore, Inc. to commission master woodworker Dale German to hand craft limited-edition oyster knives from tropical hardwood used to build Maryland's best-known tall ship, the Pride of Baltimore II.
A classic symbol of Chesapeake Bay culture that is practical for everyday use, each knife comes with a certificate of authenticity and laser engraved number from 001 to 500.

Proceeds from the sales benefit ORP and Pride of Baltimore, Inc., who together salute Maryland's oyster heritage while working to preserve
the traditions of the Bay. For every $1 received, approximately 100 oysters will be planted in local waters.

Knives purchased by Dec. 18 will ship in time for the holidays. For more information and to order a knife, click here.

Top of the Line

With a countdown, five-four-three-two-one, our  fresh garland "green ribbon" was cut to mark the opening of the Annapolis Green House!
Doing the honors, from left to right: Dave Feldman, former director of Bethesda Green, our mentor and inspiration; Doug Lashley, head of our Board of Directors; former Annapolis Mayor Ellen Moyer; and Ward One Alderman Joe Budge. (Ward Eight Alderman Ross Arnett is pictured cheering on the folks with the clippers between Mayor Moyer and Alderman Budge.) Photo by Ken Tom

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us at our Annapolis Green House Open House on Thursday. It was a fun, festive evening and we were so glad to show off our new space -- in its "before" stage so everyone could see the possibilities ahead.

Our Welcome Wall

Guitarist Tom Guay signing our Welcome Wall in between tunes.
A new start called for a new tradition: Instead of our usual Green Drinks registration, we asked everyone to sign the "Welcome Wall" in our foyer area. Everyone's signature on our wall will be captured as a great memory as we build and replace with our fundraising "Start with a Stave."

Start with a Stave

Thanks to our friends at Great Frogs Winery for inspiration and guidance and for delivering a wine barrel full of the "staves" or planks each is made of and a photo to show how a wall in our foyer area will be covered in this beautiful reclaimed wood with supporters' names engraved on the staves. We're calling this fundraiser "Start with a Stave" as this is a way to get our new space furnished and functional.

Our first "barrel" honor goes to Founding One Hundred sponsors Betty and Jim Davis (28 staves)! We couldn't be more thrilled with their generous donation! Whether by the individual stave or by the barrel, our aim is to sell 100 to cover our two main foyer walls. Sharon Lawson and Kevin Duffy bought a stave too, right on the spot! And many more expressed interest.

We'd like to pose the challenge to everyone who signed the Welcome Wall. We're hoping many of our signers (and supporters) will also follow and "join our wall."

Next week we'll have information about other ways you can help us grow into our new space! Stay tuned.

We have so many people to thank for a terrific evening.

Live music is the key to a great celebration and our friends Tom Guay, Karin Hannah Stern (a Founding One Hundred sponsor), Mike and Kelly Lange, and Andy Fegley were terrific! Tom, Mike and Andy regularly play with many bands including the Eastport Oyster Boys and the Tiki Barbarians. And Karin sings regularly with the Bayside Big Band, but as you heard, she can really rock! We can't thank them enough for playing for us. And other musicians stepped in too for totally unexpected and wonderful sets. Thank you, Andy Grete and Don Baker.

We also were so fortunate to have a special performance by the sweet voices of "Nothing but Treble," St. Mary's High School's all-female a cappella group.

Since its founding in 2011, Nothing But Treble has hosted a school Christmas Concert, performed the national anthem at various events, and participated in the Maryland Hall A Cappella Showcase as an opening act for collegiate and professional a cappella groups. Annual traditions also include performing at St. Mary's High School's Open House, caroling during Midnight Madness, and competing in the International Championship of High School A Cappella. The girls have even released a debut EP, "This Time," (in October 2015) and one of the tracks was recently selected for the 2016 Best of High School A Cappella compilation album. "This Time" is available through various digital distribution platforms including iTunes, Google Play, or Loudr, and you can listen on Spotify. See & hear them on YouTube.

And what about the food! Miss Nancy's Fancy Bakery and Julie St. Marie Catering and Event Coordination treated us to wonderful sweet and savory treats. We are so appreciative. Everything was so good there wasn't a morsel left over! If you're catering a holiday or New Year's Eve party, please consider these wonderful local caterers who do fabulous work and will make you look so good!

We'd also like to add a thank you to Julie St. Marie for the beautiful oyster shell and crab mirror she made herself as a housewarming for us. What a lovely gift.

And we owe a HUGE thank you to Greg Perry who organized the bar and bartended all night without a break. We can't thank him enough.

And a big thank you also to the man who has become our official photographer, Ken Tom. We'll post more of his photos of our event shortly.

We'd also like to thank Historic Inns for loaning us their "no tablecloth" tables that made our space look pretty darned classy.

Thank you to the Oyster Recovery Partnership for donating some of the beer. (Remember that Flying Dog Brewery donates proceeds from the sale of Pearl Necklace Oyster Stout to ORP.) See info below about the Limited Edition Oyster Knife ORP is offering as a holiday gift in partnership with the Pride of Baltimore, Inc.

Thank you also to Leonard Paper (A Founding One Hundred sponsor) for donating the compostable cups and napkins for our event.

And finally, thank you to our friends at the historic Hammond Harwood House, at the other end of Maryland Avenue, for donating beautiful greens for our holiday decoration.

Speaker of the House Michael Busch, who was out of town, sent an official citation! We're looking forward to showing him our space when he returns.

One thing was clear Thursday evening - the great level of support we enjoy. There was such energy in the room, and yes, a great deal of love. We are so fortunate.

And finally, come support us TODAY at Carolling and Cookies for a Cause!
See below. And if you haven't seen our space, we'll be open this afternoon to show you around.

Finally, our thoughts are with the Annapolis Yacht Club after the awful fire there yesterday. It could have been much worse. The club is a big employer in town. Over 100 people will be out of work until the club gets back on its feet. This will have economic consequences for our area and possibly for the LEED certified expansion that is planned for the Eastport side of club property. We wish the club a speedy recovery and a way forward that will allow its employees to have a good holiday.

And, we wish you, the supporters of Annapolis Green, a wonderful holiday season. We'll see you for Green Drinks in January at Brian Boru Restaurant and Pub in Severna Park. We'll let you know the exact date shortly.

Happy Holidays.
Elvia & Lynne
