Extreme Weather Map

Yesterday at City Dock Environment Maryland unveiled a map of weather-related disasters to bring attention to the climate change reality that weather extremes are becoming more common and more frequent.

We've told you about Annapolis' plans in the Weather it Together program to protect properties from storms, flooding, and all types of extremes. Congressman John Sarbanes joined City Alderman Joe Budge and Annapolis Partnership representative Doug Smith - who addressed us at the last Green Drinks - at the event to discuss what the city is planning.

As Congressman Sarbanes said, "It would be crazy not to take serious steps now," while explaining that remediation will only cost more later. Alderman Budge said the city is using measures in the historic district as a prototype for practices that would be applied in other parts of the city... and pointed across the harbor to Eastport.

Medication Drop Off Box
 - Don't Flush Medicines!

The Annapolis Police Department has a permanent prescription drug drop off box in the lobby of police headquarters, 199 Taylor Avenue. Discard expired, unwanted, and unused prescription and over-the-counter drugs Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., excluding holidays. Liquid products, intravenous solutions, needles and syringes, and illicit substances should not be dropped in the box. For information go to www.annapolis.gov/police and click on Medication Disposal. Unwanted medications can also be dropped off at any of the four Anne Arundel County Police Department district stations.
Holiday Magic

The Annual Annapolis and Anne Arundel Chamber of Commerce holiday event will be held Thursday, Nov. 19, from 6 - 9 p.m. at
Homestead Gardens in Davidsonville.

Everyone is invited to a magical evening with great food and festivities and a silent auction of very special gifts. Musical entertainment will be provided by Doug Segree, magic by Chad Juros, and Roulette and Blackjack with funny money compliments of Maryland Live Casino.

Annapolis Green's Eco-stations will be part of this annual event for the third consecutive year and we have worked in some
"Additional Greening" for this holiday season, reminding folks to:
  • Remember to Recycle while at your own holiday events - Starting with Holiday Magic!
  • Re-use or even bring an existing name badge
  • Carpool to Homestead... let's reduce the number of cars coming from the same places to the rural roads of Davidsonville
  • And... switch your tree lights to LED this year!

Annapolis Running Classic
& Annapolis Oyster Classic

November 21

annapolis running classic
We are working with the organizers of the Annapolis Running Classic, which includes a half-marathon and a 10k race, following a course that begins and ends at the Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and winds through Historic Downtown Annapolis, with the half marathon crossing the scenic Severn River over the Naval Academy Bridge. The Classic has been a destination event for more than 15,000 runners from over 38 states and multiple international locations.

Following the race, the event continues in the main tent, with runners, family, and friends enjoying the refreshments including hot soup for the runners and grilled and raw oysters for all. Live music keeps the party going. The public is also invited to the party.

The Annapolis Running Classic has donated over $200,000 to local Annapolis and Anne Arundel County organizations over the past four years including the Anne Arundel Medical Center's Community Health Center, Maryland Food Link, Annapolis Wellness House, Seeds4Sucess as well as to the USO. Read more.

Letting the runners get some rest for a few hours, the Annapolis Oyster Classic begins later the same afternoon and everyone is invited. It's a big festival under a heated big-top tent, with awesome local music, fresh oysters and upscale beer and wine to enhance the flavor of our beloved bivalves. Also held at the Stadium, the Annapolis Oyster Classic runs from from 3 to 9 p.m. Bands include The Eastport Oyster Boys, Timmie Metz Band, and Dublin 5. Read more. Great fun under the big top!

Annapolis Green is providing recycling and composting at the race start and finish and finishers party AND for the Annapolis Oyster Classic.

America Recycles Day
This Sunday, Nov. 15

America Recycles Day, a program of Keep America Beautiful, is a nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States.

Keep America Beautiful affiliates (like Annapolis Green/Keep Annapolis Beautiful) use this opportunity to educate neighbors, friends and colleagues through events and messages.

Recycling is the easiest thing we can all do to improve our community, conserve natural resources, and create green jobs.

Join us, Keep Annapolis Beautiful, and take the "I Recycle" Pledge. Here's how.

Give your "garbage" another life. When you recycle:
  • Your plastic shampoo or water bottle could become a park bench
  • Your cereal box could become a game board
  • Your food can could become a bike

new horizons supported services
This Saturday, Nov. 14, our friends at New Horizons and Keep Prince George's Beautiful (in the County's Department of the Environment) are sponsoring an e-cycling day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. so you can recycle those old electronics, computers, cords and cables, cell phones and monitors (not televisions). And New Horizons will also accept your personal documents for shredding and recycling at its training center in Hyattsville all next week. Read more.

Information about recycling in Annapolis

Visit Earth 911 for a national perspective and some really cool info!

And don't forget to save your natural wine corks for us! Put the plastic ones in the recycling bin and bring us the real cork. We send them to Re-Cork, a company that turns them into shoes and flooring.

Together we can make recycling bigger and better 365 days a year to reduce material going to landfills and to give our "garbage" another life.

We know that recycling can get confusing and it's getting more complicated all the time. A lot of its success depends on huge factors like the world economy. And a lot of its success depends on people like us. Annapolis Green is planning a "Recycling Recycling" workshop early in 2016 to decode this in our local area. Stay tuned for information on this.
