Comment on Stormwater Projects Proposed by the City
The City of Annapolis is requesting public input on the Stormwater Management Inventory and Watershed Implementation Plan. This plan has five goals:
- Improve water quality
- Reduce runoff from rain events, thereby reducing localized flooding
- Improve overall health of natural resources in the city
- Comply with regulatory requirements including the 20% impervious area reduction
- Consider future funding structure for watershed improvements
A specific goal of the Implementation Plan is to achieve the 2025 target of reducing the nitrogen pollution levels by 25% and the phosphorous pollution levels by 24%.

Recap
We had two special events in October!
Green Drinks "Extra" at the Boat Show Presentations on Plastic in the Bay & Ocean
Annapolis Green joined Orca Green Marine in its "You've Got Power" Pavilion during the sailboat show. We were at the show as a local environmental voice, along with Electric Yachts, Solar City, and the Maryland Climate Coalition. Orca Green Marine's intent was to introduce a new regional initiative known as "Silicon Bays" - think Silicon Valley but with technology companies in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The goal was to show sailors that they no longer have to live in a "miserly" way with regard to energy because powering their boats off the grid is completely feasible. Sailors can now live very comfortably without using electricity derived from fossil fuels.
The Green Drinks "Extra" was a lot of fun and we want to thank musicians Jimi Davies (aka Jimi Haha) and the Shawn Owen Band for making our event even more festive. And speaking of festive, the LED-lighted wine glasses were a bit hit. If you didn't get yours (just $10), just let us know. More photos of the event will be posted on our website soon.

How much plastic is in the Chesapeake Bay?
A lot.
What does it mean for the Bay's health & ours? Nothing good.
On October 13 Annapolis Green and Trash Free Maryland presented an interested crowd information on how much plastic is in the Bay and in the oceans. Bottom line: A lot and it's not good. The big problem is not so much what you can see -- discarded bottles, plastic bags, etc., it's what's very small or microscopic because marine life mistakes it for food. Our speakers included Julie Lawson of Trash Free Maryland whose two-week Trash Trawl this summer found plastic in all 60 samples collected throughout the Maryland portion of the Bay. We also heard from Maryland Delegate Clarence Lam, who is also a medical doctor. Stiv Wilson of the Story of Stuff Project discussed microbeads and California's and Maryland's legislation to stop the sale of products containing this senseless and dangerous project. Click here to see a great video about this. The issue of plastic marine debris was so shocking to sailors during the last Volvo Ocean Race that a three-hour summit on the issue was held during the Newport stopover this summer. | Learn more We invited long-distance ocean sailors Dee Smith and Matt Rutherford to talk about their own experiences with plastic debris in the ocean. Dee said that in his 35 years of ocean racing he has seen the degree of marine debris grow exponentially. During his most-recent Trans-Pac race this summer (from California to Hawaii), almost all the boats had to stop and remove plastic from their keels and there were collisions with debris from the Japanese tsunami. Many of the Trans-Pac boats, as they return to the mainland, are conducting surveys of the marine debris. | read more Matt Rutherford, who just returned from a discussed his findings during debris surveys of the Pacific and Atlantic as part of his Ocean Research Project. His most telling quote about plastic being ingested by marine life was this: "We are eating our trash." Matt made an passionate plea for all of us to do our part to reduce the use of plastic so that it does not end up in our waterways. We were pleased to bring this topic to the attention of the Annapolis community.
